Why The Ketogenic Diet Is So Important For Alzheimer's Prevention | Dr. Dominic D'Agostino
Today, I am very honored to introduce Dr. Dominic D'Agostino. Dr. Dominic D’Agostino, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine and a Research Scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC). He earned his BS in Biological Sciences and Nutrition Science from Rutgers University and his PhD in Physiology and Neuroscience from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
His research focuses on metabolic-based therapies, including ketogenic diets, exogenous ketones, and metabolic drugs, with applications spanning seizure disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, brain cancer, rare metabolic disorders, and oxygen toxicity. His work also includes research related to human performance, resilience, and extreme environments, including NASA's NEEMO missions.
Dr. D’Agostino became particularly interested in ketogenic therapies through research into oxygen-toxicity seizures and the challenges faced by Navy SEAL divers using closed-circuit rebreathers. His research subsequently explored how ketones can provide an alternative energy source for the brain and potentially support neurological function under metabolic stress.
His work has expanded into the mechanisms through which ketones may influence brain energy metabolism, neurotransmission, inflammation, and cellular signaling. His laboratory continues to investigate these mechanisms across neurological and metabolic conditions. He has been an early educational voice since the beginning of our journey and a hero of mine and I am very grateful for him to be here with us today.
Hope this is helpful for you and your family!

Fish oil capsule or a piece of salmon. Is it the same for your brain?
Not according to the research.
Here’s what the evidence says about each 🧵

Our executive director Dr. Maya Maroto joined @DominicDAgosti2 and @victoria_field_ on The Metabolic Link podcast to discuss why it's so significant that the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans recognize lower carbohydrate approaches. Check it out:
What actually changed in the new Dietary Guidelines?
In this clip from The Metabolic Link, @victoria_field_ asks Dr. Maya Maroto, Executive Director of @metcoalition, whether the new language on lower-carbohydrate diets for people with certain chronic diseases is the landmark it appears to be. Dr. Maroto explains why the Coalition sees it as a first, and how it puts that language to work with Congress and the administration.
The Coalition for Metabolic Health is a national network of clinicians, researchers, policy experts, and advocates working to advance high-quality nutrition science and drive change across policy and clinical practice.
In the full episode of The Metabolic Link, they also explore:
• Why guideline changes can take years to reach school lunches and hospital menus
• How congressional report language turns into NIH research funding
• Why the Coalition keeps metabolic health bipartisan and accepts no food or supplement industry funding
• Why many dietitians remain cautious about ketogenic diets
• Whether carbohydrate restriction is affordable on a SNAP budget

🧠 A new JAMA Psychiatry study found adults with ADHD were more than four times as likely to develop cognitive impairment or dementia later in life.
@bschermd breaks down the findings and explores how brain metabolism may fit into the picture.

This is what the job looks like on a good day.
Not the paperwork, the medications or the schedules. It’s a caregiver and a resident standing outside, grinning, with an arm around a shoulder.
Enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. Taking a walk around the block.
When you tour an assisted living home, watch how people treat each other when nobody is “performing.” That tells you more than the brochure.

A major milestone today for the field of Metabolic Psychiatry, with the launch of the Global Network for the Advancement of Metabolic Psychiatry! 🧠⚡
MetPsy unites researchers and clinicians worldwide to advance evidence-based practice in metabolic psychiatry through clinical care, education, and research. Excited for the work ahead and all this group will accomplish!
Today we introduce the Global Network for the Advancement of Metabolic Psychiatry, MetPsy, built for researchers and clinicians dedicated to advancing metabolic interventions in mental health.
MetPsy gives the global community one place to find collaborators, access shared best practices and training, and follow the latest research. It also offers funders a clear entry point to support the field as it moves from promising studies to clinical implementation.
The launch coincides with a $20 million grant from Baszucki Group to establish the McLean Center for Metabolic Psychiatry at @McLeanHospital, a member of Mass General Brigham. A defining initiative for the field, the Center will combine research, clinical practice, and specialized training to deliver metabolic approaches in psychiatric care at scale, a model we hope will set the stage for others to follow.
