While you are enjoying your Saturday, this man is serving a 130-year sentence for conviction secured with no DNA, with no fingerprints, with numerous constitutional violations, and with falsified evidence.
Perhaps out of embarrassment or desperation coming from allowing a horrendous crime to go unsolved for years, the State of Indiana (or โgitmoโ) butchered their conduct, ethics, and integrity in their case against Richard Allen.
They got it wrong factually.
They got it wrong procedurally.
They got it wrong post-conviction.
Theyโll continue to get it wrong as they defend their heinous actions against Richard Allen pre-trial.
Theyโll continue to get it wrong as they twist themselves into a pretzel to convince you, the public, and the Court of Appeals that they did not torture a man into a false confession.
Theyโll continue to get it wrong until Richard Allen is released and given a new trial, and possibly even solace with his family again.
Theyโll get it wrong until the other parties (with more circumstantial evidence against them than Allen had) are thoroughly investigated and the people responsible for the death of AW & LG are brought to justice.

The person charged with keeping Richard Allen sane was personally following the case against him.
Richard Allen's prison psychologist, Dr. Monica Wala, testified under oath that she had followed the Delphi investigation for years before Allen was ever arrested and delivered to Westville Correctional Facility.
Wala listened to true-crime podcasts and YouTube channels devoted to the case. She belonged to Delphi-focused social media groups. She used the Department of Corrections' internal information system to pull case materials for her own personal interest, conduct she later acknowledged likely violated policy. And she testified that, before she ever laid eyes on Richard Allen, she had already formed a profile of the kind of person who would have committed these killings. She disclosed none of this to her employer or to the Department of Corrections at the time, because, in her words, she did not feel it was relevant.
This is the person the system placed at Allen's cell door as his treating clinician, his suicide-watch lifeline, and very often the only human being he was permitted to speak with for months at a time.

Lucy threw up on her bed a couple of weeks ago โ the one the shelter workers gave her โ and I couldn't clean it out. So I tossed it.
Today, she's curled up under the table on Madeline's hoodie. I imagine she loves it, full of the warm, familiar smell of those she loves.
It reminds me of the day after Lucy got taken, when I went to the shelter, and they wouldn't let me see her. I left a bag of stuff for her. Anything that smelled like home. Socks. Toys. I wanted her to know that we were still here.
I can close my eyes and remember the way that day felt. I can smell the shelter as I walked in. I can hear the barking. I can feel the fear that I knew Lucy felt and the shaking in my hands that I couldn't control.
A part of that sadness will remain etched inside of me forever now, as a memory. I think this is where the wisdom of age comes from.
Now, my 11-year-old dog is sleeping peacefully, curled up with another warm, familiar object, while her girls finger-paint on the table next to her and soft music plays while a fire warms the house. These are the times it is all too easy to take for granted โ until they are gone.
Until they are locked in a cell.
We were blessed. We got them back. In retrospect, two months feels like a mercy. I can't help but think of the others. Snuggles. Major. Atlas. The other families that have had these moments seized from them by an overzealous and heavy-handed government. Some for over a year.
You're not just taking our dogs. You are taking this. You are taking these precious moments and throwing them in a cold, hard cell, waiting to die.
Like they don't even matter.
But they do.
It doesn't have to be like that. There is another way. Look at this photo. Maybe you'll see it.

Earlier this week, I met Frasier who hit the euthanasia list first of this litter. He has been extended a few times because of a medical issue with his leg. Now Iโm back in the same kennel with his three siblings. These babies are timid and have a little ringworm, which is treatable. They are friendly and wag their tails, but they are also scared and like to lump together in the corner. They donโt mind being touched and with a little time, I know they will come around to enjoying socializing. ๏ฟผ these lab puppies are just 11 weeks old and 9 pounds each. They are very sweet and ready for their forever homes. Watch their videos throughout the comments.
