Dr Bradley Ward says that the current system of funding for political parties and a lack of capacity to deliver in government makes UK politics vulnerable to cronyism.
In a @LSEpoliticsblog he says only deep structural reforms can prevent future scandals.

Foundations: Why Britain Has Stagnated.
A new essay by @bswud, @SCP_Hughes & me.
Why the UK's ban on investment in housing, infrastructure and energy is not just a problem. It is *the* problem.
And how fixing it is the defining task of our generation.

🧵on our work on b’ham city council quoted in the FT today. Key takeaways:
🔺the bankruptcy was triggered on the wrong basis
🔺This had disastrous effects as unnecessary cuts & asset sales were rushed through
🔺Another recovery plan is still possible

Under-appreciated stat from last week’s election:
Labour won its lowest ever share of the vote in deprived areas (<50% for the first time), and its highest ever share in affluent areas.
The result is a dramatic flattening of the class gradient in Labour support.

Great to see this piece published @PolStudiesRev. As
@Broid_ summarises below, we trace the coexistence of centralisation and fragmentation in the British state, arguing that the phrase 'power without capacity' helps to capture these dynamics.
Replying to @JWard232
@JWard232, me and Peter Kerr are excited to announce a new publication out today in @PolStudiesRev.
❓ We explore how UK governance could be both highly centralised and highly fragmented, concluding that ‘power without capacity’ best captures the current state of affairs. 1/3
