Charles I is depicted in armour and wearing a ruff on this silver medal that was made in 1630. It was designed by Nicholas Briot, who was one of the most gifted numismatic engravers active in the British Isles. This medal is from the Hunterian collection.

The ‘Hunterston Brooch’ which was probably produced in Ireland or the West of Scotland in around 700 AD. It was found near Hunterston in North Ayrshire during the 1830s. Now part of the collections at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. 📸 My own. #FindsFriday

The 9th century Saxon font from St. Mary’s Priory Church at Deerhurst in Gloucestershire. Remarkably, the font was discarded in 1653 and rediscovered on a local farm in 1843 where it was being used as a drinking trough for livestock. 📸 My own. #FontsOnFriday #Deerhurst

Mary Queen of Scots’ crowned 'MR' monogram appears on this gold 20 shillings. The coin, which was struck in 1543, was one of the first to be minted during Mary's reign. This example is from the Hunterian collection.

Two of the Lewis Chessmen currently on display at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. Discovered in 1831 on a beach at Uig on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, the chessmen date to the late 12th or early 13th century. 📸 My own. #FindsFriday #LewisChessmen

A proof shilling of Queen Anne that was minted in 1707 as part of the Edinburgh mint's efforts to recoin all the silver Scottish coins in circulation into new British coins. This proof specimen from the Hunterian was minted to a higher standard than regular circulating coins.

The biography of a man who saw it all in #Tudor terms; Ralph Sadler was born in 1507 and died in 1587, which means that he lived through pretty much every major event of the epoch. #AnneBoleyn fans might want to reach for the smelling salts, though; the author is most certainly NOT a fan #History #bookreviews
