Last year we were called to 152 false alarms at student accommodation, with almost a third of these due to smoke detection being set off by cooking and burnt toast. 🚒 That's time our fire engines may have been diverted from real emergencies. Help prevent false alarms by avoiding distractions in the kitchen and thinking about ventilation when you're cooking. 🍳🍽️

We are proud to share our Trauma Team achieved great success at the United Kingdom Rescue Organisation’s National Rescue Challenge in Essex over the weekend. 🎉 Laura-Jo Dicken and Tom Wilk accomplished our finest placing in the National Trauma Challenge as they finished 3rd, ensuring an invite to the World Rescue Challenge in Dubai in 2027. Our Extrication Team, made up of Ian Melville, Steve Fisher, Ashley Capper, Simon Moore and David Nelson also took part in other challenges. These included a third-place finish in the Heavy Rescue Challenge as part of a two-team event alongside South Wales FRS and a second-place finish in the RTC Extrication Challenge, which also earned them an invite to next year’s World Rescue Challenge. And that’s not all… Ian Melville was awarded the Best Incident Commander award with Steve Fisher coming second in the Best Medic standings. Congratulations to all those who took part!

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. As a mark of respect, we will fly our flags at half-mast from sunrise to sunset to honour those who lost their lives in the attacks. While reflecting on the tragedy of every life lost, as a service it's important that we take a moment to honour the emergency service workers who sacrificed their own lives to respond in service, including 343 firefighters. Never forget.

An incredible tribute from Firefighters Carole Jaszewski, Jade Samuels and Matt Calderwood who represented GMFRS last week during a challenging 110 story climb in full firefighting kit, as part of the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in Atlanta, USA. Our firefighters stood alongside services from across the UK, Ireland and USA to honour the 343 firefighters whose lives were tragically lost during the 9/11 attacks. On the 25th anniversary of the attacks, this challenge offered a poignant opportunity to honour the lives lost and to reflect on the bravery of emergency service responders that day.
