Pharmacy First in England is expanding to include five more common conditions. We welcome the expansion, but investment in the pharmacy workforce and infrastructure must keep pace with growing demand. Read our full response: bit.ly/4yxULve @drmahendrapatel

Front page of @guardian covers millions who are going to A&E for minor ailments that could be treated in a community pharmacy. As I say in the article ‘Pharmacists are highly trained professionals and can supply prescription medicines on the NHS for a range of common illnesses’.

Interesting new evidence for deprescribing anti hypertensives in nursing home residents (ie they don’t benefit from tight BP control)
Presented at #ESCCongress: In older patients with frailty who were receiving antihypertensive drugs and had a systolic blood pressure below 130 mm Hg, reducing antihypertensive drugs did not lead to lower all-cause mortality over 4 years than usual care. Full RETREAT-FRAIL trial results: nej.md/45NUK9v @escardio

With some of the most complex pharmacotherapy (& almost all risk factors for drug related harm in buckets), it always amazes me that not all palliative care teams include specialist pharmacists. If I was a hospice CEO anything less than daily input would keep me awake at night

#PharmacyFirst will not work unless GPs and Pharmacies come together to design how it will be locally implemented. We are advancing these discussions quite nicely in Doncaster and I'm excited to see how it all pans out.
#PharmacyFirst is creating some concern (understandably) amongst grassroot pharmacists in terms of their training and capacity to deliver the service. It is the right way forward for the Pharmacy Profession - but those delivering on these contracts need to show some leadership, and unsure 'their' pharmacists are on the journey with them. You can't impose change successfully. I've heard (unconfirmed) that one organisation is providing 2 days of paid training for their pharmacists - which is really encouraging to hear. But clear communication, the roadmap, and the delivery process still need to be communicated to teams. In that way, we will all make this development the success that Pharmacy & Primary Care need.
