Isn’t Schmidt paid to sift through budget? Doesn’t he want to know what exactly he’s approving?
Most employers would turf someone who doesn’t think that budget is important.

Calgary households face water bill increases totalling almost 74% by 2030 for an essential service. Yet Mayor Jeremy publicly urged Redditors to lobby councillors to keep downtown CTrain rides free. Why is affordability worth defending for free rides but not essential water?

Joel Tiedemann one of THOSE developers who loves him some density from Certus Developments and also likes Nate 🚩🚩 ward 8
is he trying to intimidate a mayoral candidate here?

CICBA's Joel Tiedemann aggressively attacking Sonya & Comms First and other ward candidates is actually a ringing endorsement for Calgarians who dont want Monster Density forced on them, stolen parking/parks/pools, high taxes, crap services, crime and stressed infrastructure

YYC chronically underinvested in essential infrastructure while treating utilities as slush funds. The 2024 water main break occurred after two decades of deferred inspections, despite the city removing over $1 billion from its water utility to fund other programs.

Great article that should be mandatory reading by all members of Calgary City Council.
Passing the responsibility right back to Calgary City Hall.

The hiring spree at city hall needs to be first on the list for scrutiny. Hundreds of positions. Millions of dollars. Adding layer upon layer to bureaucracy. End that now. #yyccc

Let’s all pretend you weren’t on council for over half that time.

This is terrifying because it isn’t even close to a binary choice. The pipes won’t explode if we don’t overtax Calgarians.
Socialists always fall back on the same answer: give government more money and everything will be fine. My colleague doesn’t mention priority spending or core services once. Higher rates are presented as the only solution.
This is what we’re facing heading into budget, and why my fellow councillors and I came forward with a promise to do the actual work and cut non-core spending and fix the pipes.

@djkelly City Hall projects $870M in utility transfers to itself for 2027–2030 while bills rise 73.6%.
Water Services had 1237 budgeted FTEs for 2026 with another 343 positions requested.
Why should Calgarians sacrifice their homes while City Hall expands?

This should have been addressed before #yyccc agreed to allow admin to submit a wish list budget and before the current hiring spree at city hall commenced. Taxpayers are getting soaked time to act was the day council walked through the door for inauguration.

Your a hypocrite... you knew about this when you were a councilor but chose to keep silent. Where is all the tax money for maintenance gone then...

Or maybe you could try cutting non essential spending and headcount at city hall. The office tower conversions for example! Nothing like putting corporate welfare ahead of the tax payers!

Maybe a memorandum of understanding with the Calgary taxpayers is in order.
