I love meeting founders who believe in their mission as a historical imperative.
@CameronR_Bell is one of them. He thinks in empires. Now he and Ufuk want to build a global trade finance institution with Greenwich Mercantile.
I'm grateful we got to back them.

HANDBAG INFERNO: Luxury design brands often incinerate their unsold and out of season goods in order to claim back their tariffs via duty drawback. High end fashion brands opt for destruction to keep goods out of cheap secondary sellers
Had a great time on the show. Give it a listen!
Tariffs, Classifications and the Chaos of Importing Right Now
Tariff turmoil has made importing more complicated, expensive and unpredictable, and customs brokers are sitting right in the middle of it. Cameron Bell ( @CameronR_Bell ) and Ufuk Dede of Greenwich Mercantile join Dooner Show to talk about how AI can help importers navigate classification, duty savings, landed costs and an increasingly chaotic global trade environment.
We get into the future of customs brokerage, whether AI can actually find money companies are leaving on the table, and what importers should be thinking about before they place the PO. Then we put business aside for a minute and settle another kind of global trade war: Manchester City vs. Manchester United.

Walking around some shithole part of London outside the Banana, and thinking: no vision of the global order. No AI and technology policy
Thinking: what would Cromwell do. William. Hengist and Horsa, with their spears.

“England is finally free of the scourge of Popery. No longer shall any romish idolator advise the King on ecclesiastical appointments”
“This is not over yet, the designs of Rome are measured in centuries. Andy Burnham - remember that name”
“Who’s Andy Burnham?”
“You’ll see”
The Government is set to introduce a Bill to remove restrictions preventing Catholics from advising the King on appointments to the Church of England and Church of Scotland.

We stopped believing we had the intellectual ability to tell good from bad.
decline of Christianity, open boarders … everything else follows from that.
If nothing is sacred, everything is for hire.
St Paul’s Cathedral just signed a four-year deal with nightclub Fabric to put DJs under Wren’s dome.
Nelson is buried in the crypt. Wellington too. This is where a nation buried its dead and thanked God it still had a country.
They say the shows are “seated.” They say it’s “engagement.” The Queen’s former chaplain called it apostasy. Nelson’s family called it an insult to his memory.
A church that rents the nave to a club that once lost its license after teenagers died on the premises is not “reaching a new audience.” It is admitting it no longer knows what the building is for.

Two years ago an SF investor told me I looked like a loser, working in my bedroom in Europe.
When I started talking to VCs in SF in 2024, I thought they cared about whether the thing was real, and whether you understood the problem better than anyone else in the room.
I was wrong, and it cost me.
I had the right labels, but I grew up in the north of Britain, where showing them off is bad taste, so I never did.
SF likes to say prestige doesn't matter here, that a dropout with a good idea beats a degree.
Everyone repeating it knows it's a lie, for the most part.
The seed round isn't settled by the idea.
It's settled by whether the room knows the names on your CV and in your network and can pattern match against them, which is how the money moves as fast and as casually as it does.
@joinef and @theresidency fixed that for me, and I'm forever grateful to them.
They put you in rooms with some of the best people in the world and you learn quickly, because you're drilled every week on how to talk to investors, how the game here actually works, and how to build something worth funding.
London's honest about being snobbish, whereas SF is Hollywood for autistic people.
We just dress worse and tell ourselves we're still the hippies who built the personal computer.

Elon's Mars is not a backup for humanity. will most likely end humanity .
He pitches it as insurance, so that if something catastrophic happens to Earth, consciousness continues somewhere else. That holds right up until the colony starts behaving the way every colony in history has behaved.
The American revolutionaries were British, one or two generations out of Britain, with the same language and the same crown and three weeks of ocean in between, and they went for independence anyway. In Brazil it was the king's own son who declared the break.
Mars will be up to twenty minutes away by radio, populated by people born there who share nothing with Earth but ancestry. It will break away, and once it has, it will arm.
You might assume what follows is a Cold War, two rivals frozen in place by mutually assured destruction. But that logic belongs to Earth, where the same nuke you fire is likely to come back at you because we share one atmosphere, one climate, one biosphere. Restraint was never benevolence, it was geography.
Two planets share none of that. You could end the other world entirely and your own sky would stay clean. And at twenty minutes each way there is no phone call, no crisis management, nobody to ask what that launch was.
In time, uncertainty will make a first strike irresistible, as it nearly did in the Cold War on Earth, only to be stopped each time by proximity.
Colonising Mars will end our children's lives.
