This was an interesting and fun project, led by @joseba_fdl. The findings are quite intriguing as well, and probably not what one would immediately expect! 👇
🚨 New paper alert! 🇯🇵🤔 Why are all LLMs Obsessed with Japanese Culture? On the Hidden Cultural and Regional Biases of LLMs 🇯🇵🤔 👉 We find that LLMs show strong regional preferences, often disproportionately favoring certain countries, such as Japan. 🇯🇵

See you tomorrow at the WASSA workshop! 👋 I will be talking about social media from an interdisciplinary perspective, and lessons learned on how we NLP'ers can contribute to other disciplines (e.g. social sciences) more effectively.
⏳ Only two days until #WASSA2026 on March 29 at #EACL2026! 📜 The program is now available. See the full schedule, including the invited talk by @CamachoCollados: “Social Media Analysis in the Language Model Era: An Interdisciplinary Perspective” 🔗 workshop-wassa.github.io/202…

Can RAG amplifies social bias and which component affects the most? @Tianhui will present our work on 27th March (Friday) from 9:00-10:30 in the Safety, Alignment and Prompt-Induced Risk oral session. He is also on the job market. Come to chat with him 🚀 #eacl #nlproc
New results at #EACL2026 🎉 RAG is effective for reducing hallucinations — but it’s not all roses. We show that RAG can amplify social bias when retrieved documents are stereotyped, even if the base LLM is relatively unbiased. Evaluating RAG ≠ evaluating the LLM alone.

Retrieval Augmentation (RAG) is great for injecting knowledge that was not available to an LLM during its training and improves its factual accuracy, while reducing hallucinations. However, there is a catch! We find that RAG also amplifies social biases in the generator 1/
