Electric Dreams exhibition Tate Modern London, on until 1st June 2025. Here with Catherine Mason. This is the Senster by Edward Ihnatowicz - not working - the 'head' moves to track sound, so appears to be listening attentively. Was shown at Cybernetic Serendipity 1968 curated by Jasia Reichardt. Wide ranging show, mainly 'cybernetics' however defined, a lot of op art experiences, including Gyson's Dream Machine, which was working while people chatted on the bench next to it, which was not the original intention! I was of the generation raised on Burroughs paperbacks in the 80s so Dream Machine is a remarkable sight. Burroughs "Cities of the Red Night" 1981, check it out. #computerartssoc @CathComputerArt #tate #JasiaReichardt #senster

I've Never Been More Excited to Read a Book in my Life... Catherine Mason is incredible. Had the absolute privilege of hearing her presentation to the Computer Arts Society today on George Mallen & early digital art history in the UK - her research left me entirely entranced.
My new book about the history of art & technology, computer art & generative art is out now! @SpringerNature Featuring George Mallen, pioneer of creative computing since 1964, cybernetics, interactive art & much else 🙏 @StepBD, Nick Lambert & @jpbowen link.springer.com/book/10.10…

'Sea Fans' (1974) by Grace C. Hertlein Told in the words of @CathComputerArt, from her IG: "She was a pioneer of computer drawing and editor of several early magazines inc. ‘Computer Graphics and Art’ in the 1970s in which this piece featured. This is her ‘Sea Fans’ of 1974 made from experiments on the microfilm plotter at the UofIowa Iowa City, during the summer of 1974. Hertlein wrote, “Microfilm output opened up a whole new avenue of exploration, in which the film output was taken into generative photography.” This image appeared reversed as black ink on white paper on the cover of ‘Computers and People’ magazine that year (pic 2) of which she was also the editor. She said: “A great many computer graphics are more aesthetic in their reverse form, where the innumerable lines, in a white pattern, are more restful and contemporary than in their counterpart forms of black ink lines on white paper.” You could buy this print and 2 others for $2.50 at the time! I wonder how many people did?"
