I’m taking a short break from legal commentary as filming begins in New England on In Paul’s Eyes, a documentary I’m executive producing with Los Angeles-based directors/producers from Many Trails Production.
Thirty years ago today, I stood in a makeshift hospital courtroom for a trial as Paul fought for the right to die. An expert skier and triathlete, he had suffered a devastating stroke three weeks before his wedding, leaving him "locked in" and able to communicate only through eye movements.
As a young lawyer appointed as his guardian ad litem, I was tasked with determining whether he was competent to refuse life-sustaining treatment. He was.
My friend Attorney Geoffrey Spofford represented him; his fiancée Judy never left his side. What began as a legal case became a deep friendship with an extraordinary young man whose intelligence, determination, and humor changed my life and career.
In Paul’s Eyes is a story of love, dignity, and self-determination. After 30 years, Geoff and I will reunite today with Judy as filming begins in the place where Paul loved to ski.
