This type of thinking produces a very interesting type of person - one who thinks that because they hold Good opinions, it's the same as being a Good person and therefore they don't really have to actually _do_ anything Good. I've met several over my lifetime

dinosaurs went extinct and it became really hard for megafauna to exist and to maintain and engineer landscapes/open up the canopy so rats were like whatever it can’t be that hard

My takeaway from Dune generally is that Herbert shows the world as a great big ecosystem - Paul is not a "Great Man" in the sense that he's super swell and neat, but he is an aberration within the universe's ecology, and it's interesting to see his downstream effects
Whenever someone says “Herbert wrote Messiah cause Paul bad” just ask them why he went on to write Children of Dune and God Emperor which show Paul was right.

I enjoyed this one as a kid watching it on Channel 11, but it deserves an Actually Good adaptation. Hell, combine it with The Mangler.
Stephen King didn't like the movie Graveyard Shift, adapted from his short story and released on this day in 1990, calling it "a quick exploitation picture", but it has its fans. If you're looking to fill 90 minutes with a splash of horror silliness, you could do worse.

You peeps are the people I expect to be well-researched and granular to contribute cases of this to me: directors who use a film to explore ideas or concepts from a film they were not allowed to make

This is legitimately much more entertaining than what I see in most normal travel shows.
I realize it may not be common knowledge that in 2008 before Glee, Lea Michele debuted her Anthony Bordain inspired travel show where she traveled from Manhattan to Queens as a “borough travel junkie” for exactly one (1) episode that has been mostly scrubbed from the internet

I would never dream of asking this of people for my birthday. A wedding, no problem. But not a birthday.
My friend wants to plan a couples, no-kids weekend getaway, splitting the cost of a large AirBNB, in January for her 30th birthday. I really do not love this idea (husband is mortified), neither to spend the money nor to get someone to take the toddler for 3 days. It would be a 2.5 hour drive away for us, too, so it’s not like we’re close if something happens. I haven’t been away from him for even 1 night yet and he still just seems so young! It would be very hard to leave him for that long. Am I just a party pooper who needs to get over it? Genuine question. Like I actually need advice here guys

"Jampack all schools and museums with glowing screens that are infinitely glitchy" is one of those 2000s-10s Terrible Ideas. At this point I think a kid taught to do math with a stick and a ground of dirt, like Euclid, will turn out smarter than the "raised on tablets" kid.
1. The tablet is a screen for everything, not just an occasional presentation 2. It reduces human contact, which is essential for teaching and for friendship 3. It reduces the use of the body and so narrows the capacity for memory 1/x

I’d posit this is because big publishers strangled the life out of ebooks. They charged more didn’t bundle them with paper purchases and limited lending from libraries etc.
"bookselling was in a panic about the Kindle...Today, the e-reader market has plateaued at some 10% of traditional publishers’ revenue, while about 75% comes from paper books, a technology essentially unchanged since the nineteenth century" newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…
