Your reminder that football isn’t just a game. That supporting a team in the ground isn’t about turning up to be entertained, it’s about taking part. But also the sheer joy that live sport can deliver in a world of increasingly AI driven slop

Shot / Chaser This stuff isn't about "children talking in lessons". It's about whether or not politicians understand what improves outcomes for students. Pushing schools to groovy but nebulous ideas leads to worse results. @LucyMPowell h/t @StuartLock @Trivium21c

Well as much as I love iPhones, I’m not going to pretend that Siri has been anything but usekesss. So @Apple I looked forwards to this Siri AI update… but sadly to find that Siri is still utterly useless 2/10 must try harder

Today in The Times I’ve spoken about something deeply personal. In 2018 my brother Tariq took his own life. He never told anyone, not his closest family and friends, what he was going through. Looking back, we believe stigma was a large part of it. He isn’t alone. More than 7,000 people die by suicide every year in the UK, and over 70% were not in contact with the mental health services that might have saved them. It remains one of the biggest killers of young people. I’m supporting this campaign because of Philip Pirie, who lost his son Tom in 2020 and has since rallied experts and politicians around the country to push for change. When he approached me, I was very happy to join forces with him. Together we’re calling – alongside psychiatrists, charities and MPs from across the political spectrum – for a national public health campaign to reduce the stigma around suicidal thoughts and encourage more people to reach out for help. Public health campaigns work: we’ve seen it with drink-driving and HIV/AIDS. And the evidence suggests this one would more than pay for itself. Every life saved spares a family unimaginable grief and the country real cost. Giving people permission to speak saves lives. If you’re struggling, or worried about someone who is, the Samaritans are there free, day or night, on 116 123. thetimes.com/article/11bef78…

Dolly Parton was uniquely American. She could not have come from anywhere else. Her sheer force of personality, talent and goodness transcended musical genres. She embodied all that is good and great about America. A tremendous loss to humanity

Jason Arday dead. For all that seems to have gone wrong, he caused no real harm. Can’t help but think of @jonronson’s you’ve been publicly shamed.

Lord Kelvin, inventor of the only temperature scale of any serious merit alongside many other things, during his 53 years of lecturing at Glasgow University would fire a loaded gun at a pendulum to illustrate one particular point to Scots undergraduates. One day he inevitably missed and the bullet went through a wall and embedded itself in the chalkboard of the lecturer in the adjacent room. He dashed through expecting horror only to find gleeful students, one of whom (it is alleged) shouted: “missed him ! Try again Bill !”

People. Please stop recommending books that look good. I have so many to read and ones I’ve somehow not quite finished and now I’ve just bought another one. I need to retire for a year to catch up.
This by @mccloskeybooks was just pure pleasure. You'd expect a former CIA analyst's depiction of the espionage world to be full of compelling and convincing detail, but David is just such a beautiful writer and that lifts this to a different level. I loved his first novel, Damascus Station, but this is just as good. An incredibly entertaining page-turner. But very satisfying too.

2028 first teaching? I mean come on. There are so many things wrong with the whole, policy but 2028? It will be a disaster if they stick to that time frame

As a non hugger I can appreciate Milliband’s ill disguised horror when Burnham follows up his handshake with a hug. On this at least I can support Milliband 😁
Ed Miliband has been appointed as Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs @FCDOGovUK.

Education secretary your job I'm afraid is to say no they can't watch the football no matter how much the voter you're scared of might not like it.

Quote: "This is how USAID spent your tax dollars" I think people have lost the will to try fact-check this guy due to the volume of lies he spreads. Also it's actually pretty difficult with this image and quite time consuming. It just happens I had nothing better to do. /1

Still waiting….
When will the sector know what the teacher cost of living increase is? The fact we don’t know yet is extremely poor. How can school leaders plan budgets?

Gut feel one education…. This focus on inclusion will back fire and make things worse. Poor ‘trendy’ practice will come to fore and funding gaps and lack of evidence based practice will lead to outcomes becoming worse for those we want to help
