We ended round 2 of last year's cipherchallenge.org with 8100 users registered-delighted that we had 9300 this year! The 3rd practice round just launched heading into the half term break & we'll return with the 1st competition round on 5/11/26. Really hope you will join us!

You are smashing it with sign ups for this years cipherchallenge.org competition! Tomorrow at 3pm we launch the third practice challenge, then pause for the competition to start on Nov 5th. It's not too late to join the fun!

How would expanding higher order terms help the machine discover the unsolvability of the quintic, the irrationality of pi or the infinity of primes? I am not saying it couldn't do that, just that handling 7th order expansions or large numbers of variable isn't likely to help it.

It's not too late to visit the home of the National Cipher Challenge. We have one more open day planned on 7th November, so if you would like to see where cipherchallenge.org started and maybe meet some of the team behind it then head over to bit.ly/3UupTxe.

We are amazed at the take up for round 1 of this year's cipherchallenge.org competition. We had 8720 signed up easily beating last years total of 7400 at this point. Highest participation was from Wilson’s School (Wallington). Will we beat 10K this year? That's up to you!

This highlights the amount lost if humans cede maths to AI. It doesn't cover what happens if humans get to explore the space with AI. What if AI is the rocket that gets us explorers to the moon? The hard work we have to do now is to work out how best to travel there.

Nearly 7,000 competitors signed up for cipherchallenge.org and everything is set for the practice run starting in ten minutes. It is not too late to sign up - free to UK schools and colleges - and the competition proper runs throughout the Autumn term, starting on Nov 5th!

The clock ticks down to 3pm on Oct 8th and this year's cipherchallenge.org. 3 months of fun and frustration for schools across the UK (and let's be honest, a few that sneak in from abroad too!). The first practice challenge starts tomorrow, and we can't wait to see you there!

Isn't there a famous saying about that? "I am not writing this down to remember it later, I am writing it down to remember it now."

Ssh don't tell*, but cipherchallenge.org has soft-launched for a week of bug hunting before we go live with the 25th National Cipher Challenge! Registration opens 24/09, competition starts 08/10, but if you want a sneak peak ... *Actually, please tell everyone!

That is true, but it does also risk hiding some of the axioms! How many people looking at this proof realise it is dependent on a LOT of assumptions about area/angles that are only true in one geometry. Having said that, unpacking all that does lead to a much deeper understanding

We'd adjust the axioms to remove the contradiction, probably introducing a new one less accessible to our methods of proof. I suspect our axioms are the result of evolution in which fitness is measured by difficulty in finding inconsistency plus power to produce results.

Re "maps on to". This is a standard phrase in mathematics. E.g., the real numbers map onto the non-negative real numbers under the squaring map. (They don't map on to the set of real numbers because nothing maps to a negative number when squared.

Perfect preparation for the @MathsSoton National Cipher Challenge, starting in September. Produced in partnership with @GCHQ. Bookmark cipherchallenge.org so you don't miss it.

Maybe I should be more direct! Last year over 800 schools took part in a maths competition that cost nothing (and didn't have to cost teachers any time either)! Why let them keep all the good stuff to themselves? Head to cipherchallenge.org for more info

Would this be a good time to point out that @MathsSoton offers a self-contained free STEM enrichment activity throughout the Autumn term that needs no work from busy teachers? Ideal for an after-school club or just advertise it. Head to cipherchallenge.org for more info.

Maybe it's a typo and they have someone called Vitaly Protin doing the courtside intros?

Well, as my ol' grandma used to say, look after the pennies and the billions'll look after themselves.

Two possibilities: Machines can ask & answer deep questions that humans will find interesting. In which case there'd better be some humans around who know enough maths to be interested. Or not in which case we probably need some humans around who know enough to ask the questions.
