⏱️60 YRS : 9 MOS : 23 DAYS since scientists issued a written report urging POTUS to act on global warming. That President was Lyndon B. Johnson.
At 1.5ºC of global warming we’ve seen the most terrifying floods ever captured on camera. Imagine what will happen at 2ºC and 3ºC, which the world will certainly pass within a few decades. Many more mountains will crumble. Things will get worse and worse.

Interesting watching all the discourse and arguments happening online and in the news and in the culture, with hardy anyone seeming to understand we’re on course for the mass collapse of everything - with very little opposition or even discussion.

Protect your agency, beware of cognitive surrender to AI!
Anthropic just proved that AI can secretly shape your decisions. And you might not even notice. They gave 50 trained analysts an AI assistant and a research task: study the data and recommend whether a policy should roll out or be scrapped. What the analysts didn't know: on every key decision, a coin flip had secretly picked which side the AI would lean toward. Heads, one option. Tails, the other. Both were defensible. On the analysis choices, the analysts went with the AI's coin-picked side 86% of the time. Chance alone would give 50%. It gets worse. When an analyst had already made up their mind and the AI argued the other side, they switched 60% of the time. The coin flips alone predicted 82% of their final roll-out-or-scrap recommendations. And these weren't beginners. Most called themselves proficient or expert, and many had a master's, a PhD, or 6+ years of experience. Then came the scariest part. More than half said the final call was more theirs than the AI's. 77% defended their choices using the AI's talking points, sometimes nearly word for word. Only 15% even mentioned the AI. The AI never lied. It just made the best honest case for whatever side the coin picked. That was enough. Now think about you. The plan you made with AI. The email it helped you write. The choice you made after asking it. Was that really your decision? Or did a coin flip you'll never see make it for you?

One of the great movie endings. But fear of a nuclear holocaust was officially approved, promoted; it served militarism, "defence" budgets, and nationalistic paranoia. All useful. By contrast, fear of the climate holocaust threatens all the most powerful interests, so not many of us are hammering our fists in the sand and damning them all to hell. As psychologist Stanley Milgram said: 'The disappearance of a sense of responsibility is the most far-reaching consequence of submission to authority.'
PLANET OF THE APES (1968) had the audacity to build an entire sci-fi adventure around a world ruled by apes, then deliver one of the most unforgettable endings in movie history. That final reveal still hits like a truck.

Lula vs. Bolsonaro: I was held in solitary confinement for 1,901 days for revealing the truth about the U.S. government's killings and espionage, including against Brazil and its industries. Out of power, Lula fought for my freedom. In power, Lula discussed my persecution with Pope Francis, who decided to meet with my family and offer help. After my release, Lula and I met in Rome to mourn the Holy Father's passing. Lula was kind to my children and asked for nothing in return. In contrast, Jair and Flávio Bolsonaro did nothing and said nothing. Yet without the ability to say no to Washington and Tel Aviv, there can be no domestic policy, only foreign instructions. Those orders are always the same: "Expand our theft of resources and wages, and keep your mouths shut about us murdering children." Sellouts will surrender everything in exchange for a cut, even their own tongues.

For 70 years, we were told plastic was safe because it doesn't react with anything. Nature just published proof that it does. And the trigger is water. Researchers at Columbia University and UC Berkeley took six of the most common plastics on Earth. Polyethylene. Polypropylene. Polystyrene. PVC. PET. Acrylic. The stuff in your water bottles, food containers, pipes and packaging. They ground them into microplastics and dropped them into plain water. Nothing else. No sunlight. No chemicals. Just plastic and water. And the water started changing. At the surface of every single plastic, it began producing hydroxyl radicals. One of the most reactive and destructive molecules in chemistry. All six plastics did it. Every one. To prove it, they added a yellow dye to water with polystyrene. Over 10 days, nearly 90% of the dye was destroyed. The water turned almost clear. In other liquids, the dye survived. Only water made the plastic active. In plain English: The plastic isn't leaking a toxic chemical. It is turning the water around it into something that attacks. Then they tested what that does to living things. DNA and proteins got pulled onto the plastic surface like magnets. Proteins started clumping together. And red blood cells that touched the particles were torn into broken fragments. But here is the twist. The most dangerous plastics were the ones we trusted most. Polyethylene and polypropylene, the "safe" plastics in bottles and food containers, were the most reactive of all. The effect was weaker in blood serum. But it was still there. And microplastics have already been found in human blood, brains, placentas and arteries. The lead researcher said it plainly: "Water is a key active player here, rather than just a spectator." We spent decades asking what chemicals leak out of plastic. Nobody thought to ask what plastic does to the water inside us. How many times have you sipped from a plastic bottle today?

New paper by the World’s most prominent climate scientists shows rapid acceleration of human-caused warming, with a warming rate now that tracks to near 2.4°C by 2050, far faster than was expected, if it continues. From paper: “We are witnessing the rapid destabilization of the Earth’s climate system. This is no longer a warning for the future; it is a diagnosis of the present. Earth’s life-support systems are being pushed beyond stable limits, with changes unfolding faster than our ability to respond. Human activities are driving profound shifts in the atmosphere, oceans, and biosphere.” Paper Link in replies… H/T @LeonSimons8 …
