Seven years of this and no solution @Sagal_AW. Will you stand up where @Keir_Starmer didn't?
The building sector has clearly failed, and consumers carry the risk.

Many buildings weren't built correctly in the first place. Why are any innocent leaseholders paying for any historic fire safety defects? The latest Bill proposed by @AngelaRayner and @mhclg doesn't go far enough to help #endourcladdingscandal. 👇🏼 @LBC interview with @AliMirajUK

A property blogger reports a leaseholders service charge rising from £216 to £733 a month, alongside a proposed major works programme including over £500,000 for balcony flooring alone.
When does financial liability become financial persecution?
Leaseholders don't control the building, its maintenance history, the contractors or the decisions that lead to these extraordinary bills. Yet they're expected to shoulder potentially unlimited costs, regardless of their ability to pay or the value of their homes.
Nobody disputes the need for essential maintenance. But there must be statutory limits on what ordinary homeowners can reasonably be expected to contribute.
Owning a modest flat should never mean accepting unlimited financial liability for a building you don't control.
Leasehold reform must address affordability, not just forfeiture.

“They are all paid off by the parasitic freehold lobbyists. Makes me sick how, when in opposition they were all high and mighty stating Leasehold should be abolished. Look at these crooks now. Disgraceful.”

Sent my written evidence to the Public Bill Committee this morning, calling for funding to buy back unmortgageable shared ownership flats and convert them to social rent.
The Bill aims to protect social housing stock, yet publicly funded SO flats are sold at auction.

I now believe leasehold is the single biggest unaddressed scandal in the UK, by virtue of the sheer numbers involved. Like the post office the government is tinkering around the edges and completely failing to address the real issue, leasehold itself.

Ground rent provides leaseholders with no benefit or service. Pure wealth extraction, enabled by laws that turn homeowners into tenants of grubby rentiers.
When I called out this secret lobbying campaign in March, there was incredulity: teapawt.net/FreeLeasehlders/status…
Westminster has a Big Money problem.
@HarryScoffin told Parliament that No 10 and the Treasury have been captured by lobbyists — which is why @UKLabour has broken a manifesto promise to leaseholders, dropping @Law_Commission reforms from the new law.

Leaseholders are being looted.
One London development generated a secret £1.6 million insurance commission for a freeholder’s related company.
Yet Starmer drops the promised @Law_Commission reforms that would stop this endemic grifting and orders another performative review.
.@Keir_Starmer cannot help himself: another review instead of action to let people take control of rip-off service charges, cut freeholder commissions and stop the grifting draining wallets and killing the flats market.
A quick cost-of-living win for @andyburnham though!

Michelle Mone owes £188m to the Government, in the last 9 months nothing has been done to collect it.
If you owed £188, they would have fined you thousands of pounds and sent the bailiffs round.
For the rich they do nothing.

A Section 20 major-works bill can become service-charge arrears. Arrears can become forfeiture proceedings. And forfeiture can mean losing not only your home, but every pound of equity you built up in it.
How many people have been made homeless this way?
Guess what? The honest answer is that the Government doesn’t know.
The Ministry of Justice has admitted that its systems cannot accurately identify residential leasehold forfeitures. Ministers have relied instead on stakeholder estimates and even those figures don’t tell us how many began with unaffordable major-works bills, or how many people and families were ultimately displaced.
That absence of data is not reassurance. It is an indictment.
Don’t think they can take your home? Under leasehold, you may discover that you were never regarded as its true owner. You’re simply standing in the way of their asset.
The happy family on the settee with the Labrador, or the smiling young couple holding their keys aloft in their postage stamp garden in the publicity photographs, have done their work.
They sold you homeownership.
The small print sold you something else entirely.

Please tell @SteveReedMP that leasehold reform is necessary & get him to tell the PM so you get backing to do the job as promised ASAP and not at the 11th hour, when it will be seen as cynical. People vote for action, not vague restatements of personal values and visions.

There is significant anger amongst leaseholders who feel betrayed at the glacial pace of reform - while we are being dragged through court and forfeiture by freeholders, the government tells us we were unrealistic to believe they would fulfil their manifesto pledge to end LH.
