Dear AAU Parents, Please take a little advice from a parent who has been around AAU basketball as a Coach & parent for 20+ years. Stop chasing imaginary rankings from paid services like PGH and cool social media posts from programs that over hype players on socials because that is all they can offer. Don't get caught up with trainers who are only worried about your children when they are in their gym. Ask real questions of program directors about approach on player development, college relationships and track record of getting players to college programs. Ask directors about recruiting plans for their players. Pay attention to programs that retain players and are not out recruiting over entire rosters year over year. Track record & trust between families & programs matters; especially in a rapidly changing recruiting landscape, you better be with a program that is committed to all their players and not just a few high profile girls. The top of EVERY circuit has really good players/teams but the bottom of EVERY circuit has bad teams too. Being on an EYBL or 3SSB team, and playing 6-8 mpg can really hurt your recruitment. Not every program is a fit for every player/family but PLEASE do your homework!! Have honest discussions about potential level of play in college and where your child might fit. Be very weary of anyone who only talks about D1. Winning games in AAU is nice and hopefully your daughter is competitive and wants to win but it ultimately doesn't mean anything and not many college coaches are paying attention to the score unless one team is getting smoked. In fact, a coach might pay more attention to how your daughter is acting as a player when they are losing vs how they are playing in a 25pt win. Good luck to all as the girls get prepared for the High School season. @nj_panthers @CoachJordanNJP @unitedNJaau @ShoreshotsGirls @newjerseyrise @ESBC_BlueFlames @NJLadiesHoops @TinyGreenNBS @coachschoiceusa

Beware of these recruiting services, quick to take money but not put in any work. A good friend just called and said the head of a service called him about a payment. Since they signed up he never returns their calls, doent provide any updates or services for his daughter! 🤬🤦🏽‍♂️

I’m at my son’s 8u basketball game. The amount of parents standing on the baselines and coaching from the stand is crazy!

All the best teams I’ve ever played for and coached shared a bond that transcended the court. They genuinely respected each other’s differences while understanding that they were collectively greater as a ONE! #Team

Coach made a great post here. As a parent of a student-athlete and former college coach it hard. There is no playbook to navigate the crazy club sports world. There are good days and bad days but just know parents love their kids and will do anything for them.
I spent this weekend at the EYBL and Made Hoops events in Las Vegas. As I walked from court to court, one thing kept standing out to me. Parents. Youth sports has become very comfortable criticizing them. Sometimes it’s deserved. We’ve all seen parents who lose perspective. But that wasn’t the story I saw. I saw moms and dads riding the rail for hours, cheering every possession, carrying bags, buying meals, paying for hotels, flights, gas, tournament fees, and everything else that comes with chasing a dream. I saw parents encouraging their child after tough games, celebrating small victories, and doing everything they could to help them navigate a recruiting process that is confusing even for people who work in college athletics. Here’s the reality: There is no handbook for raising a student-athlete. Most parents are simply doing the best they can with the information they have. Often, while being purposefully mislead for them to spend more money. They’ll make mistakes. So do coaches. So do athletic directors. So do officials. So do recruiters. This weekend reminded me that the overwhelming majority aren’t trying to make youth sports harder. They’re sacrificing time, money, weekends, and comfort because they believe in someone they love more than themselves. The loud minority gets the attention. The quiet majority deserves the appreciation. Sometimes we should spend a little less time criticizing parents and a little more time recognizing just how much they’re giving up so their kids have a chance.
