Tempo matters, but the 2025 CFB data makes one thing clear:
Tempo is not the offense.
The fastest team in the study, West Virginia, played at 19.3 seconds left on the play clock but finished 4-8 at 4.5 yards per play. On the other side, Vanderbilt snapped it at 8.3 seconds and produced 7.2 YPP with a 10-3 record.
North Texas also went fast and produced. Navy went slow and produced.
The conclusion is simple. Tempo is a tool. Efficiency, sequencing, and situational command decide whether that tool actually helps you win.

This was a really strong period. Especially considering it’s day 3. The fellas were spinning it.

Texas HC Steve Sarkisian - Play Calling Flow & Empty Thought Process
Play Calling Flow
- "I think there is a real gut/real instinct to calling plays. You have to trust your gut."
- "There is a gut instinct involved that then ultimately gives you a flow to what you're doing. Because you're feeling the game rather than being a robot just reading off the call sheet."
Empty Thought Process
- Help the QB ID coverage/pressure
- RB/TE location creates DEF indicator
- Empty Menu vs premium looks

Everybody wants discipline… until discipline gets loud.
Everybody wants toughness… until toughness gets uncomfortable.
Hard coaching isn’t abuse.
Hard coaching is correction.
Hard coaching is standards.
Hard coaching is loving a kid enough not to let him stay average.
If a coach is demanding effort, detail, toughness, and accountability bothers you… that probably says more about today’s culture than it does the coach.
