It was during the writers’ room that we changed her to Asian and created that role, which ultimately Michelle Yeoh was going to inhabit. We talked about Michelle for that role in the room. I already knew Michelle and had always wanted to do something with her, so once the role became Asian, I brought up Michelle and there was talk, then we went and looked at clips of Michelle and we got excited about her. I’d actually been introduced to Hong Kong movies and Michelle Yeoh by David Byrne of the Talking Heads, who was a Jackie Chan fanatic and took me to the Nuart to see a Jackie Chan film festival. Police Story 3 was playing, with Michelle Yeoh jumping the train with a motorcycle. It was like, Wow, who is she? She’s amazing. And Michelle has the first full action sequences—really standalone action sequences—of any female hero in a Bond movie, and she’s got two of them that are wonderful."
