This paper answers why can’t you remember being a baby?
For over a century, science said you can't remember being a baby because your infant brain was just too "immature" to record anything. researchers assumed your hard drive was basically turned off for the first two years of life.
But this wild paper from Yale completely rewrites how we understand human memory..
Researchers literally put awake babies (between 4 and 25 months old) into an fMRI scanner to watch their brains process new visual experiences in real-time.
and what they found is mindblowing..
the infant hippocampus isn't turned off at all. it is actively firing, capturing, and encoding episodic memories. they proved that babies with higher hippocampal activity during a new experience formed a highly stable memory trace.
the babies are recording the data. the memory of your first birthday, your first steps, the exact layout of the room you slept in.. it was all successfully saved to your brain.
so why can't you remember it?
the paper concludes that infantile amnesia isn't an "encoding" problem.. it is a "retrieval" problem.
your brain recorded everything perfectly. but as you grew, your brain underwent massive developmental shifts, like explosive neurogenesis (the rapid birth of new neurons), which completely restructured your neural networks. the pathways to access those early files got buried or locked away.
you didn't fail to make the memories.. you just lost the encryption key to open them.
somewhere deep in your hippocampus, the exact first-person memory of being a 1-year-old might still be sitting there. you just can't access the file anymore..
the human brain is terrifyingly beautiful.

Around 1500, Hieronymus Bosch painted sheet music on a sinner's bare butt in hell. 500 years later, someone transcribed and performed it. Now you can hear the original butt song from hell.

People going through their first episode of psychosis may be especially vulnerable to chatbots that validate distorted beliefs, a new study suggests. At one large medical center, 61% of “AI psychosis” cases involved first-episode patients. dlvr.it/TW27Jw

Her face and hands disturbingly contorted as if someone were taking over her body. A deep masculine voice began to speak through her and threatened Grof and claimed ownership over Flora

A large-scale mapping study reveals the functional architecture of the human insula, showing how this deep brain region tracks bodily sensations like heat, tingling, and nausea. This work clarifies how the brain integrates internal physiological states into conscious experience.

The profzi scheme is a famous comic from Jorge Cham. It compares academia to a Ponzi scheme: many students work for a professor to produce more papers. The professor takes credit for all the paper, but few of the advisee will have a great academic career because... the whole thing is pyramidal... the numbers don't add up.
The whole operation is largely sterile and only works due to the pretence that producing peer reviewed research papers is equivalent (synonymous) to producing new, valuable, knowledge.
What happens if AI can produce the papers?
The scheme is exposed.
We see it in mathematics right now. The AIs sidestep the entire peer-review process... and provide correct proofs to what was considered by the math establishment as the important problems.
These people are very angry.
It is the great AI debunking.
So what is the solution? Go back to what should always have been. The purpose of research should never have been to produce peer-reviewed papers. This was always a perversion. (For people who do not read me regularly, the peer-review model became dominant in the 1970, it is a recent addition.)
The purpose, of course, is to solve problems that people care about. That's much more difficult than producing papers... so it puts the bar much higher for scientists and researchers. But the bar should never have been lowered in the first place.
What happens to the 'profzi scheme'? I predict, I hope, that it will fall. Not all of a sudden, but once the system come to the realization that the production of papers is a solved problem, AI can do it better than us... then it won't be decades before students start worrying about where the train is headed.
(The comic attached is AI generated. Obviously.)

"I would love to believe that when I die I will live again, that some thinking, feeling, remembering part of me will continue. But much as I want to believe that, and despite the ancient and worldwide cultural traditions that assert an afterlife, I know of nothing to suggest that it is more than wishful thinking.
The world is so exquisite with so much love and moral depth, that there is no reason to deceive ourselves with pretty stories for which there's little good evidence. Far better it seems to me, in our vulnerability, is to look death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides."

Neuroscientists Giulio Tononi, Christof Koch, et al. make a strong case for real free will (not an illusion) if Integrated Information Theory (IIT) is the correct explanation of consciousness:
"If IIT is right, we do have free will in a genuine sense: we have alternatives, reasons, and values, we make decisions, and we—not our neurons or atoms—are the cause of our willed actions and bear responsibility for them."

Essential reading on the wider implications of the crippling of Starlink in Ukraine 👇
1\5
America went much further than that with its recent Starshield/Starlink restrictions on Ukraine. Let me explain the effects.
Starlink is a technology that provides critical communication service to government and civilian sector, I repeat the service is critical.
So what happened, and why it matters?
Someone wanted a 2 cent lower diesel prices before the midterms, or was promised something by putin in exchange for this, maybe he just had a bad mood.
Many say Ukraine is not an ally, so the USA can just do whatever it wants, however the service that was crippled by American political leadership or at their silent approval is sold to Germany and Poland, which are part of NATO and are in critical interests of these countries to keep Ukrainian operations running, you may argue, but it's official position by the elected political leadership of these states.
Many say it's a blow to the starlink, others that it's a blow to American military industries.
I think it's much wider, it's a significant in blow to the American tech and industrial sector which has been driving Americans economy for the past decades.
I am a cloud infrastructure engineer developing on premise, hybrid and sovereign solutions. This cloud infrastructure hosts data services used in production facilities, telecom, AI, mining industries and energy sector. Essentially all critical services to a functioning state.
Right now everything is run via remote control planes. Here are more concrete 3 example in the thread below:

Plot each prime p at distance p from the origin and angle p radians.
Something wonderful appears: a galaxy of 20 spiral arms.
Why 20?
Because 44 radians is almost 7 complete turns, and exactly 20 residue classes modulo 44 are coprime to 44.
A beautiful meeting of π, geometry, and prime numbers.

Lucy, an incredible 15-year-old blind and neurodivergent pianist from Yorkshire, performed Bach’s beautiful “Prelude in C” alongside her teacher, Daniel, before an audience of 6,000 at the Royal Albert Hall.
Bach himself might have shed tears if he had lived to hear her perform this piece. Tears of amazement. Tears for a young girl who lives with blindness yet has been blessed with a soul that expresses such beauty through her music.

I had trouble fully unpacking what this paper actually was measuring, what its findings were, and what the implications are for human/primate consiousness
so i had Claude read through the paper and this thread, compose a script, and create an explainer video
1/ We discovered something totally unexpected about the neural structure of consciousness that overturns decades of thinking on its biological basis and brings us significantly closer to the recipe for generating conscious awareness.
