And for the terminally confused: women DO have the right to single-sex toilets (and changing rooms if needed) AT WORK. As do men. Under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.
For service providers, single-sex facilities are permissible, not obligatory, but failure to do so may give rise to indirect sex discrimination.
Indirect, because treating men and women the same, but sex discrimination nonetheless, because it is detrimental to women.

NEW - a serious legal loophole has been exposed: sentences in youth courts cannot be challenged for being ‘unduly lenient’.
In this case, a 14-year-old boy who stabbed a girl in the neck in a “terrifying, premeditated & persistent” attack received a non-custodial referral order for wounding with intent.
Had the sentence been imposed at Crown Court the Attorney General could send it to the Court of Appeal for review under the ‘unduly lenient sentence’ scheme, but cases in youth courts (and magistrates courts) are exempted. There are understandably growing calls to close this loophole. I don’t expect many cases would be affected but it’s surely important that there’s a check on those sentences which are so clearly out of kilter.

Excellent session in Westminster yesterday with @matildagosling presenting @SexMattersOrg research on harm that the Conversion Practices Bill would do, and talking with MPs and peers.
The bill will stop therapists feeling able to work with gender questioning children and young people, and there is no exception at all for parents.

GOOD NEWS! Brighton Council appears to have had a change of heart on pushing through a mixed-sex only changing village at its new £6.9 million swimming pool at Withdean.
The local newspaper reports that the facility has been redesigned to include single-sex changing alongside mixed-sex family changing, something local residents had requested.
Cabinet member for sports Alan Robins said the original changing village plans were compliant with Sport England advice at the time but that new designs had been drawn up based on the Equalities and Human Rights Commission guidance, which says single sex provision should be based on biological sex.
We wonder if the EHRC statement that Councils which only provide mixed-sex changing could leave them liable to legal claims of discrimination against women may have concentrated their minds?
This can only be good news for the women and children who will use the new centre. Our research shows that in England, Wales and Northern Ireland 86-88% of sexual crimes in leisure centre changing rooms took place in mixed-sex facilities. In Scotland 100% of these crimes occurred in mixed-sex changing rooms. They are a complete failure of safeguarding and protecting. 🚩
We hope this outbreak of commonsense will spread to all councils planning new leisure centre facilities. It can never be safe to allow males into areas where women and children are changing. Single-sex changing facilities should now be industry standard in every new project.
Withdean’s new plans are set to be approved at a Council Cabinet meeting in December. We urge Brighton residents to keep an eye on proceedings and ensure that the Council fulfils its promise to provide single-sex changing options.
The safest changing room is a single-sex changing room.

@UniofOxford is failing to safeguard its students.
I may have been the first journalist to approach Oxford University for comment on photographs of Matt Rattley appearing to wear giant prosthetic breasts in academic settings - images he has posted online himself.
Why? This is one of the world's leading universities FFS.
Speaking as a woman, as well as a journalist, these images raise questions for me. Clearly, I cannot establish someone’s motives from photographs, and I am not claiming to know his.
But these are the questions these images raise for me:
- Is there a sexual or fetish element to this presentation?
- Has the university considered whether staff or students could experience it as sexualised, uncomfortable or intimidating?
- What standards apply to sexualised presentation in academic settings?
- Do students and staff feel free to raise concerns, given the power imbalance between a lecturer and students?
- Have any complaints been made, and if so, how were they handled?
We do not need to know someone’s private motives to ask about the effects of their conduct at work.
These strike me as entirely reasonable questions about a university’s responsibilities to its students and staff - and therefore matters of public interest.
Yet I haven’t seen them examined in any mainstream reporting.
