With climate change, droughts, El Niño and increasingly unreliable rainfall threatening food production, growing small grains such as millet, sorghum and rapoko, alongside short-season crops, is an important step towards building resilient food systems. These crops can better withstand dry conditions and help women smallholder farmers maintain food production when rainfall is low.
Small grains are rich in nutrients and contribute to diverse, healthy diets. Beyond feeding families, they offer opportunities for women farmers to process, package, brand and sell their produce, creating income, strengthening their economic independence and adding value to their hard work.
At IYWD, through initiatives such as the Ramangwana Model Homes , we promote climate-resilient farming, indigenous seed preservation, agricultural value addition and environmental protection as interconnected pathways to sustainable livelihoods and community wellbeing.
Planting trees is also an investment in our wellbeing and future. Trees help protect soil, support biodiversity, provide shade and contribute to healthier environments. Fruit trees can provide nutritious food, while sustainable woodlots can help reduce pressure on indigenous forests and the burden of collecting firewood, which often falls on women as unpaid carework.
As we adapt to a changing climate, let us grow crops that sustain us, preserve our seeds, add value to what we produce and plant trees that nurture future generations.
