“Austria has a long, long tradition in supporting Uganda, they have very good connections, and a lot of money is given to this Country. From my side, I'm always happy to get the funds to support Uganda, but I'm also a little bit always afraid, what happened if we finish the project and go out?”
These concerns highlight the importance of sustainability beyond the project implementation period. Investments in sanitation facilities, water tanks and solar energy systems are essential in improving community well-being, but their long-term impact depends on proper maintenance and continued functionality.
“If we put such a lot of money to build toilets, water tanks, solar systems, it needs to be maintained. Otherwise, in three-four years, you may find that some of these materials are not working, the solar switches faulty so it means some dollars have already been invested and talking care of these things should be a priority for the beneficiaries."
Sustaining development gains requires shared responsibility among local governments, communities and implementing partners. Prioritising routine maintenance, timely repairs and local capacity-building will help protect these investments, ensuring that the facilities continue to serve their intended purpose long after the project has ended.

In Kiyagara Parish, Kahunge Sub-county, Kamwenge District, the community is benefiting from an automated solar-powered water well that provides a reliable and sustainable supply of water.
Powered by solar energy, the system reduces reliance on costly and unreliable energy sources while ensuring that water remains accessible to households and other community users.
Beyond providing water, the investment strengthens the sustainability of the local water system by promoting reliable access, reducing operational costs, and supporting community resilience to climate-related challenges.

Why this matters?
Climate change is intensifying WASH challenges, from droughts reducing water availability to floods contaminating drinking water sources.
Financing models must evolve to include climate finance, blended finance, and private sector investment to reach underserved communities.
