Everyone who tried to gaslight us about Anakin murdering kids must never be allowed near power, nor can any of their friends have it.

I am honestly in awe that they're just openly declaring that their way is the way of evil, and people are still like, yes.

Tolkien knew things... In The Silmarillion, the human race appears in the east of the world. He also knew that human history is much older than believed (let's remember the ruins of Göbekli Tepe). Tolkien had a classical education which is no longer seen these days.

Some children are born without a cortex, and yet they giggle, protest and startle. Mark Solms @Mark_Solms, the neuroscientist and psychoanalyst, thinks that tells us something about where consciousness starts… I loved this one. LINK IN REPLY

Last year, several of you pointed me to Over the Garden Wall, Patrick McHale's 2014 Cartoon Network series. It's ten short episodes about two brothers lost in a dark wood on Halloween. It turns out to be one of the most complete explorations of the in-between I've seen in pop culture, closer to the first canto of Dante than you'd expect from a cartoon. In this video (link below) I discuss the symbolism in the show. Please note that it contains spoilers.

On AI art:
One issue is that 'people with absolutely no artistic background', when using generative AI to create 'art', tend to have very bad taste.
And they produce mostly kitschy, derivative fantasy art full of hot elven babes in impractical armor, stereotyped techno-utopian cityscapes, garish psychedelic eye-candy, and/or mashups of pop culture tropes & characters.
Yes, they are 'creating things they could only dream about five years ago'. But their 'dreams' are mostly third-hand derivatives of other people's artistic imagination.
This situation is getting somewhat better. We do see occasional flashes of true brilliance in AI art that's prompted by aesthetically educated & perceptive souls.
But let's not pretend that generative AI is a substitute for a well-trained eye. (Not yet, anyway.)
