I’m writing an article on ableism. What’s your most shocking example? Xxx

So a bunch of disabled people have had their videos taken down about @JohnFetterman, defending his use of captions and addressing ableism, on Tiktok?
For misinformation?!

Can't agree more. There is no reason to begin a call any other way in these settings. From the moment the number pops up on my phone, I am no longer breathing and will exhale only when I hear "there's no emergency..."

Bill Hader was the ONLY one wearing a fucking mask. Believe me, my multiply disabled, high risk ass noticed. 🫠🫠🫠

"Yeah I may have this condition that impairs my ability to function, but I'm not disabled! Because there are people who have it worse than me and to call myself disabled would be offensive and rude to them by minizing what they suffer from"
Babes that's literally ableism

My hottest, most thermonuclear take is that systems of academia like peer review, academic freedom, and citation, cannot be analyzed outside the backdrop of the systems of oppression upon which the academy is built. Any analysis that fails to grapple with this is incomplete.

How do we navigate the ableism enshrined in research ethics? @RebeccaEliLong and @Hanelizqui Hannah Quinn (University of Toronto) wrote about consent-as-method for the Disability as Rupture collection recently published in Fieldsights.

I don't know who I'm producing FOR anymore. How can I ground my research in light of constant unrelenting ableism? Access pull-backs have left me untethered from academic communities. I'm not sure I was ever imagined to be in them, and I'm not sure I can meaningfully return

Why I don't do point deductions on late work: it's discrimination and it leads to segregation. People who turn in late work are more likely to be neurodivergent students, poor students, students experiencing grief or trauma, students with categiving responsibilities, etc.

Watching people post celebratory flight pics about going to conferences and other events is hitting really hard these days. I am so scared for my life every single day. So scared for the lives of my disabled community members. And this is a slap in the face. 1/3

Who else hates the “describe your pain” medical question?
“Well, you see it’s pain. Most certainly pain. Can confirm.”

In reality the root of this fraud feeling is a result of systematic bias & exclusion! & rather than naming that, society aka the academy found another term to cover it up & name the experiences of marginalized communities that places blame on the person rather than the system

When we talked about accepting a “new normal” we meant a “everyone participate in COVID precautions for foreseeable future” normal, not a “yippee let it rip and kill/disable countless people” normal

You hold people accountable. No amount of training makes abusers stop abusing people. The only thing that works is accountability. Don’t tolerate it, don’t put them on committees/positions of power, find alternative works for syllabi. Stop rewarding abusive people.

Today during a frustrating meeting about a department-wide class attendance policy, I said, “This is what institutionalizing ableism looks like—this right here.” And suddenly the energy of the conversation shifted.
People were uncomfy, and I’m proud of it.

Straightsplained by an "ally" who supports the "ally" flag b.c if we make it hard for people to be our ally by taking away their symbol they won't want to be our allies...
Hate to say it but, if they only wanted to be allies when it's easy...were they ever even allies at all?

Why does my annual report ask for info that can be found on my plan of study? Or my CV? Or the transcripts you know they have access to? OR why can't I just attach those documents rather than retype everything?
Also: why ask for repeat info on a progress form due the same day?

If a "cat" can figure out that alt text makes things more accessible, so can your workplace. Your school. Your government. Your grocery store.
It's a "cat", people. Why are they letting a CAT beat them?

Once again, I must remind my fellow academics that if your power analysis stops at "student" you have been on campus too long. Do we have power over students? Yes. Are the students the most vulnerable in our work? No. Do the students have power over (some of) us? Yes, actually.
