The only strength & conditioning coach to be part of 6 Super Bowl-winning teams was reading Dr. Michael Yessis’ work.
Mike Woicik didn’t just read it. He studied it, learned from the Soviet training information Doc was translating, and then applied it to his own training programs.
That should tell you something.
The information we’re working through every week on Supertraining in a Year is the same type of information Mike Woicik was actively seeking out while building a career that would eventually span 30 years in the NFL and six Super Bowl rings.
Take advantage of it.
Every week, @NutromicSports and @Dr_JustinLima work through Supertraining, discuss what Doc Yessis and Dr. Mel Siff were teaching, and connect those concepts to what coaches are doing today.
Learn the information that Mike Woicik wanted to learn.
Full Mike Woicik conversation drops Wednesday.

"We do vision work"
As the late great Coach Kurt Hester said:
"No you don't have a vision program, you do a vision drill. Why don't you buy a whole bunch of books, and why don't you read up on it? You have to really learn cognition, learn, you know, eye dominance. You have to learn a lot of stuff, from an optometry book to implement it."
You see a lot of this going around with the C. J. Stroud eye warm up from the other day.
No shade thrown at C. J.
This is to the coaches who copy that one drill, and try to say they do vision work. You already heard what Uncle Kurt said - do more homework on the topic.

Athletes aren't machines.
One of Yuri Verkhoshansky's biggest criticisms of traditional periodization was the idea that adaptations happen on a predictable timeline.
Life doesn't work that way.
Athletes have stress, relationships, academics, jobs, poor sleep, travel, and countless other factors influencing performance.
This week on Supertraining in a Year, we were fortunate to have Jeff Moyer @DCSportTraining join the discussion.
One of the best takeaways:
"The most adaptable person in the room has to be the coach."
The best coaches don't just write programs.
They manage the training process when reality doesn't match the spreadsheet.

One of the highlights every year of the Sport Movement Skill Conference is the VIP Social held on Friday night.
This year’s group (image excludes a few people who were there earlier) got together to break bread & talk shop in a more relaxed, informal fashion.
Though every SMSC is exhausting & contains very long days, it is the situations like these, containing moments of fellowship & interaction, that help make it all worthwhile.
Also special S/O to @mke_mma & @SBGAthens for a fun trip deep down the rabbit hole around a Q I’ve been wrestling with daily related to relevant, specifying informational variables across MMA & football & how we can effectively facilitate an athlete’s coupling to them in training (based on the speeds & intensity the athlete executes at).

What if two coaches completely disagreed on how to develop skill?
At most clinics, you hear one perspective.
At the Sport Movement Skill Conference 2026…
You’ll hear multiple—and watch them clash.
Because progress comes from friction.

Light aerobic training, done with proper sequencing and progressions, helps preserve and support power.
Focusing on bad programs that do too much of a good thing is just a bad argument.
Countless programs scoff at aerobic work to befriend athletes. We need to be honest here.

The 3 head-to-head debates taking place at the Sport Movement Skill Conference 2026 (6/5-6/6 in MN) are an opportunity to genuinely connect around a shared topic of importance (e.g., gamespeed, the nature of repetition, emphasizing speed in athlete development).
We feel that for the debate participants, and the attendees from the community alike, this will bring everyone to the Challenge Point...fostering deep and critical thinking, improves communication, and boosting our own confidence by requiring all to analyze, defend, and critique opposing viewpoints in real-time.
S/O to the individuals willing to exist in that crucial space!
Will you be one of them?!
