If I think a party's policy is good, I'm not a 'supporter' of that party. If I think a party's policy is bad, I'm not a 'supporter' of the other party. I wish more people understood that it's possible to have an objective view on a policy without pulling on a team's jersey.

There is a genocide in Gaza. This artwork tells part of that truth. It is appallingly that governments, local, state or federal, are acting to suppress that truth. This artwork showed in Canberra, it exposed violence, it didn’t cause it. That’s its power. theguardian.com/australia-ne…

government should be boring. roads should work. water should be clean. hospitals should function. public transport should run. the taxes we pay should quietly fund all of it. nobody needs their government to be entertaining. they need it to fucking work

In July 2024, Australian taxpayers funded Jillian Segal's trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she met up with her US "special envoy" collegue, Deborah Lipstadt. That's right, Deborah "do you want a beeper" Lipstadt and we paid for it. What have you done to us @AlboMP?
When Deborah Lipstadt held the position of US Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism under Joe Biden, Lipstadt replied "Do you want a beeper?" when it was suggested to her that Israel had become weaker since 7 October 2023. I'd expect nothing less from Jillian Segal. #SackSegal

Dear Treasurer @JEChalmers and Finance Minister @SenKatyG, while you search for savings to appease the inflation monster, please get serious about revenues: e.g. a fairer tax on publicly owned natural resources e.g. gas exports. This would be overwhelmingly supported by the Australian people.

Periodic reminder that there is a difference between AI and generative AI. We like the AI that detects cancer, helps disabled people live their lives, etc. We don't like generative AI that steals from artists and drives people into psychosis.

Dept Sec are on contracts. The shift under Keating to managerialism, from permanent public servants to contracted senior ranks has created a Ministerial Service. We should abolish contracts and return to permanent public service and ‘frank and fearless’ advice. #auspol
#FOI has revealed a plot by our million dollar departmental secretaries to “to strengthen our management of [Senate] committees”. It’s contemptuous of the Senate and completely disrespectful of our system of responsible government. #disgrace #auspol michaelwest.com.au/cover-up-…

Patrick Stewart was, like many of the greatest British artists of the 20th Century, a working class boy who became a world-class artist thanks to a public arts education made possible by Post War social democracy. He never forgot it.

This is a good read and you all should read it. The team that found the PHP vulns is a talented bunch of folks with amazing careers spanning decades, and they have been discovering high-profile vulnerabilities for years. Just go to Calif_io's Team bio page to see their accomplishments. Truly an accomplished group of folks. However, over the last 2 weeks, I've heard many people ignore the people behind this research, claim that AI discovered these vulns, and spread the "OMG, AI is so dangerous" message by pointing to the PHP vulns. In reality, humans still discovered these, and they deserve the credit for their hard work.
Drunken Korean bar rant: Perhaps the most important takeaway from @unpromptedsf is the widening disconnect between demonstrated AI capability & the narrative being constructed around it. Frontier AI labs & their financial backers have a vested interest in weaponizing the credibility of exceptional researchers, turning legitimate breakthroughs into the perception that AI possesses capabilities it has yet to reliably demonstrate. Fear, hype, & the promise of technological superiority are powerful instruments for shaping public perception, influencing markets, & attracting investment. Yet much of this impressive research remains fundamentally dependent on years of human expertise, technical intuition, & highly specialized domain knowledge. These are not incidental contributions. They are often the very reason these breakthroughs are possible in the 1st place. The work coming out of labs like @calif_io is a perfect textbook example. Their research deserves genuine recognition & respect. Many of the people behind it are figures I have admired for years, as have countless others in our industry. That admiration, however, should not exempt the commercial interests funding & promoting their work from scrutiny. Their motivations, incentives, and ultimate objectives deserve far more attention. We should be able to celebrate meaningful advances in AI without allowing frontier labs to repackage exceptional human achievement as evidence of autonomous machine capability. Recognizing the value of AI should never require diminishing the expertise of the researchers making these advances possible. There is a fundamental difference between advancing science and manufacturing the perception of progress. Increasingly, the latter appears to be the more lucrative business. What concerns me most is how effectively this narrative has drawn some of our industry's most respected figures into its orbit, lending their hard-earned credibility to a marketing machine whose interests may not necessarily align with their own. And judging by the public reaction, it's working remarkably well... Sadly
