The upshot of Peter Thiel's fourth Nashville Antichrist lecture, "The New Rome": the United States is the new Rome, but as a katechontic force, it runs the risk of flipping into something antichristic. Rome, he argues, lies somewhere in the morally ambiguous middle—in Biblical terms, neither Babylon nor the New Jerusalem.* The investor charts a trajectory from Rome to the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium) to the Holy Roman Empire. After Napoleon (who, as Thiel has noted, was likened to the Antichrist in his time) brought down the HRE, things get muddier. He lays out what he believes to be the three key elements of a New Rome: It must be a military superpower (citing Daniel 2:40, in which King Nebuchadnezzar dreams of a kingdom "as strong as iron"); it must be a financial superpower that monitors and controls payments (citing the apocalyptic Revelations 13:17); and it must be an ideological or religious superpower that wins hearts and minds (citing Matthew 24:24, which reads, "For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.") "I don't like Russia" as a candidate for the New Rome following the (much earlier) fall of Constantinople, Thiel says, arguing that the country's trajectory after the Bolshevik takeover raises a question that is difficult to answer. Thiel says he can't look into Vladimir Putin's heart to see if he's more of a Christian or more of an ex-KGB agent (while God alone knows, "I have my suspicions"); at any rate, in Thiel's judgment, a New Rome, as something katechontic that can become antichristic, would need to be more powerful than Russia. Back to the 18th/19th century: Thiel hits the War of Spanish Succession, describing it as the last effort to create a Catholic superpower (and quoting Robert Southey's 1796 "The Battle of Blenheim"). The next best candidate for the New Rome, he argues, was Great Britain. Although the British were, in his judgment, somewhat scared of Thomas Hobbes, they adopted the naval power that his image of the state—"the Leviathan"—may evoke. In Thiel's lecture, Alfred Lord Tennyson's 1842 "Locksley Hall"—among other things, a prophecy of "the federation of the world"—unites the Brits with their successors, the Americans, through a dream of world empire. (President Harry Truman carried it around in his pocket.) The investor lists various ways the United States has self-consciously imitated Rome, from the Latin pseudonyms adopted by the Founders in the Federalist Papers to the appearance of George Washington, like Caesar Augustus before him, on currency. The United States, Thiel argues, may be the one truly sovereign country, with the president as something like mayor of the United States and dictator of the rest of the world. Five Eyes/ECHELON, the SWIFT payment system, and the dollar's reserve currency status all bolster its power. Thiel argues that the United States' high level of violence, at least relative to other developed countries, is part of a package deal. (A slide, "We police ourselves as violently as the rest of the world," shows what an outlier the U.S. is with respect to the death penalty, including Russia.) Thiel contends that Americans "haven't totally neutered ourselves" and abdicated their katchecontic responsibilities. *William Blake's Biblical image for England, adopted as its anthem, and distinct from the Sermon on the Mount's "city on a hill."

Power selects for a specific personality type, and it is not yours. F.A. Hayek spelled this out in 1944. In a centrally planned system, the people who rise are not the most competent or the most honest. They are the most willing to exercise force against strangers, the most comfortable with contradiction, and the most skilled at coalition-building through favors rather than merit. Government filters for the bad ones from the start. The mechanism is straightforward. Political power means controlling resources you did not earn. Capturing that control requires outcompeting rivals who have no ethical constraints. A principled candidate refuses to promise contradictory things to different voter blocs. An unprincipled one does it without blinking. The unprincipled one wins. Repeat this selection pressure across hundreds of electoral cycles and you get the U.S. Congress in 2026: a body where the average member has held office for over a decade, raised millions from interested parties, and delivered almost nothing measurable to the people who voted for them. Bureaucracy compounds the problem. Once entrenched, state agencies attract people who want authority without accountability. You cannot fire most of them. The FDA, the TSA, the Federal Reserve all function this way, staffed by individuals whose career advancement depends on expanding the agency's reach, never on serving you efficiently.
