#JonathanDaly, my father’s biographer, replies forcefully in @TheTLS to a review of his book, “The Man Who Knew Russia: Richard Pipes, Humanist and Cold Warrior.”
This podcast by #SecretStateFiles, "American Cities Were Once Full of Cheap Boarding Houses—So Why Did They Disappear?" explains something I'd long wondered about: Why did the homeless become a major U.S. problem in the 1980s?
In brief: Progressives in the early 1900s began a campaign to outlaw the boarding houses, rooming houses, single-room occupancy units, and other inexpensive lodging. They succeeded—and homelessness followed.
In brief: Another erroneous leftist policy did great harm.

Headline: "US ties with Ukraine hit new low as Trump slights Zelenskyy and eases up on Russia"
Of Trump's many errors, this is the most consequential and morally the most egregious. Helping Putin's Russia in its war of aggression against Ukraine shames me as an American.

I discussed the prospects for more war between the United States and Iran with @SanaMaqboool on @PakTVGlobal.

#GuyMilliere at @GatestoneInst has written the best article explaining the origins of the riots in France and the Islamist role in them:

Two thoughts about @AbdulElSayed, @TheDemocrats' candidate for Senate in Michigan:
1) Unlike the other Muslim members of Congress, like Omar & Tlaib, he is an Islamist and therefore even more dangerous than them.
2) Unlike Mamdani, who can be judged by how New York City fares, as senator, El-Sayed would be judged by his rhetoric, not his actions.
This is extremely useful. With it, Mansouri offers a long-awaited retort to Erdoğan's 2004 statement in Chicago about there being no much thing as "moderate Islam"; let's hope her honest statement cancels Erdoğan's mendacity.
“We are Muslims, not Islamists.”
Morocco’s first female prime minister, Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, has drawn widespread criticism for distinguishing her Muslim faith from “Islamist” politics.
A member of the secularist Authenticity and Modernity Party, El Mansouri has spoken about balancing Morocco’s Islamic identity with modernity and reform.
Türkiye's colonization of Syria proceeds. The caption under this picture reads "Students arrive for class on the opening day of the new Damascus International Recep Tayyip Erdogan Turkish School in the Artouz area on the outskirts of Damascus on October 4, 2026. The school of some 600 to 900 students will be run by Turkey's Ministry of National Education in coordination with the Turkish Embassy."
Trump:
“Gays for Palestine, how about that. I saw it today, and I said, ‘Wait a minute.' Do you know what they do to gay people in that part of the world? Let’s send them over someday to negotiate. You’ll never see them again. I don’t want to tell you, but they do things you wouldn’t believe.”

This @WashingtonPost story confirms my view, that whether future presidents emulate or reject Trump as a model depends on the general sense of him:
"The shape of the post-Trump future will be determined by how Americans feel when he exits the stage: Will they applaud his exercise of power and attacks on long-standing structures? Or will they recoil?"
I bet on recoiling. This moment will be seen not as the start of an era but as an aberration. And in that lies good news for the country.

.@AmirTaheri4 at @GatestoneInst:
"Today, perhaps for the first time in decades, there is a realistic chance of thinking of regime change in Tehran. But for that chance to be translated into reality, the leftover Khomeinist regime must be defeated politically. And that requires intervention by the Iranian people. That intervention, however, cannot take place under bombs or a steep rise in quotidian hardship. … Iranian people need a chance to catch their breath and resume their fight for freedom and dignity."

Nice to see that @GeorgeWill agrees about the need for a GOP defeat, going even further than me, hoping "that on Nov. 3 most of the Republican Party will be smashed to atoms. It is now a trembling and embarrassed, because frightened, emanation of one man."
He makes exceptions for Mike Rogers and Susan Collins, as do I.

Well, top this: Khomeini's website a couple of days ago cited me positively for realizing that Khomeini forced the West to recognize the political importance of religion.

On receipt of the mid-term ballot, this Independent is thinking:
1. On issues, I favor Republicans over Democrats 2-1
2. MAGA must be expunged
➡ I want Democrats crushingly to win the Congressional mid-terms, in the hope that this defeat will delegitimize Trump and (even more) @JDVance before 2028, hopefully clearing the way for a normal Republican like @SecRubio.
That said Trump has savaged my representative, @RepMariaSalazar, so I must vote for her.

A reminder that this happened in 1999, when an @EgyptAir pilot successfully brought down an airliner just outside of New York City. For more, read below.

Precisely right: "The key reason for US failures in Iran is the assumption that one is dealing with a normal nation-state rather than a vehicle for an ideology."
Why is this so hard for Americans to understand?
