Over the last few days, I've read some variant of the following on this website, several times: "You AI pessimists are freaking out over nothing. Some people have always worried about the end of the world, and none of their worst fears have ever come to pass. Just look at nuclear war- people have been saying that nukes would end the world for the past 75 years, but we're still around today. Stop worrying so much!"
Ignoring the obvious survivorship bias (if nukes had destroyed us 50 years ago, we wouldn't be around to tweet about it now), do these folks think that nuclear war was avoided in a vacuum?
Preventing nuclear war required (1) scientists loudly warning the world, (2) the general public demanding safety, and (3) politicians negotiating treaties to limit nuclear proliferation (often against the wishes of the more rabidly nationalistic factions in their own countries). It didn't just happen. Ditto with other near-catastrophes, like CFCs almost destroying the Ozone Layer before we globally banned them.
Good outcomes do not just happen by default. If we want to avoid an AI catastrophe, we are going to have to stop pretending that they do. We need to roll up our sleeves and make the good outcomes happen.
Let me get this straight... OpenAl was founded as a nonprofit. Open source. For everyone. "To benefit humanity." Then he raised billions of dollars. Then he closed the source code. Then he converted to for-profit. Then he scraped the entire internet without asking anyone. Then he used YOUR writing YOUR art YOUR code to train his models. Now he's on stage saying you'll pay HIM to access intelligence. Just like a water meter. He stole all of your data. He built the product with your work. And now he's going to bill you to use it... Corporate greed has reached an all time high, and they're not even hiding it anymore...

I preferred it when people were ashamed of declaring their bigotry and lack of compassion.

A disheartening message today from a cousin in Gaza:
“I say it frankly, we can no longer live. Help and save the people of Gaza. There is no food - no flour - no clean water - no medicine for treatment - no hospitals :( :(“
As I have mentioned, my cousins in Gaza are Orthodox Christians. They are not belligerents, yet they and about two million Palestinians have endured a year and a half of relentless bombardment, physical and psychological trauma, and extreme food and water shortages.
They are weak, tired, sick, injured, hungry, and thirsty. Many are elderly or young children. They have no control over the situation.
Everyone knows multiple persons who have been killed. In my own family, several of my cousins were killed in October 2023 when an Israeli strike destroyed part of the church complex in which they were sheltering. Many were just beginning their lives.
Please pray for all the innocents in this catastrophe—whether Jewish, Christian, Muslim, or otherwise—Israeli or Palestinian.
Please pray that all parties involved, including the United States, choose peace and humanity instead of more destruction and death.

Merit-based pay for teachers is a terrible idea, because student performance is largely a function of student quality, not teacher quality. This will just punish the brave teachers willing to work with the worst students.

Marco Rubio: “For years to come, there are many people on the right...that are going to be having to explain and justify how they fell into this trap of supporting Donald Trump because this is not going to end well.”

If the United States deploys troops to forcibly remove Muslims and Christians—like my cousins—from Gaza, then not only will the U.S. be mired in another reckless occupation but it will also be guilty of the crime of ethnic cleansing. No American of good conscience should stand for this.

This is a five alarm fire.
The people elected Donald Trump to be President - not Elon Musk.
Having an unelected billionaire, with his own foreign debts and motives, raiding US classified information is a grave threat to national security.
This should not be a partisan issue.
