The most exhausting thing about defending Britney is having to constantly remind people that the music itself has always showcased her ability to sing. Growing up with her, songs like “…Baby One More Time,” “Sometimes,” and “Lucky” showcased her range, control, and ability to bring emotion to a record. Did she lip-sync? Yes, but primarily during performances with demanding choreography. There are plenty of live performances that prove she could deliver those same vocals outside the studio. I honestly think the constant narrative that she couldn’t sing eventually got to her, and maybe she started believing it herself. That’s the real tragedy. Britney has a distinctive, beautiful voice and an incredible ability to adapt it to whatever a song requires. She’s not just a vocalist; she’s a vocal actress. 👌🏾
