Received this lovely gift recently of Longhorn cufflinks & tieclip from a former student now practicing in Texas, who just won his 1st trial! They were accompanied by a touching letter about how much he appreciated my teaching, especially about AI. #Faulknerlaw

Past Passport has become one of my favorite history accounts on X.
Joseph Pickett writes for people who love history but refuse to believe the world is always getting worse.
Every generation thinks it is living through the end of everything.
Debt, corruption, bad leaders and social decline may feel modern, but people have faced versions of the same problems for thousands of years. They survived them, often with far less than we have now.
That's what makes @Pastpassport worth following. Joseph doesn’t treat history like a collection of dates and trivia. He uses it to put the present into perspective and offer an alternative to the endless doomscroll.
Past Passport is for anyone who wants to understand the past without losing hope in the future.
Highly recommend giving Joseph a follow and checking out his newsletter.
Christopher Nolan shot Troy at Aït Benhaddou, Morocco.
He rejected CGI for on-location filming. Here we have a 1,200-year-old mud-brick ksar standing in the actual Sahara dust.
He nailed the setting.
The script for the Odyssey is a different story. Nolan built his Odysseus around Emily Wilson's phrase "the complicated man."
She's now written that his script doesn't earn it. It's the same word, and the wrong century, according to the one who chose it.
This fight is an old one.
Alexander Pope got hit with almost the same complaint in 1725, three hundred years before anyone had heard of a movie screen.
A different medium, the same argument, over the exact same Greek word nobody's ever fully translated.
New story coming today on this old Odyssey argument.
Every generation thinks the world is ending. It never is. Join our community of historical optimists as we prove the doomscroll wrong. 3 history essays weekly.
