Healthcare wasn’t broken by Obamacare. Before the ACA, insurers could deny coverage for preexisting conditions, impose lifetime benefit limits, and price sick Americans out of coverage. The ACA helped nearly 20 million more Americans gain insurance by 2016. Republicans then weakened key provisions, including eliminating the individual mandate penalty. The ACA wasn’t perfect, but blaming it for everything wrong with healthcare ignores both history and the facts. What exactly was better for patients before 2010?

1. Remember healthcare before Obamacare?
Before the ACA, insurance companies could, in many circumstances:
Deny coverage because someone had diabetes, heart disease, cancer, or another preexisting condition.
Charge people substantially more based on their medical history.
Place lifetime dollar limits on certain insurance benefits.
Exclude particular medical conditions from coverage.
Leave young adults without access to their parents' insurance before age 26
