Thank you for raising this, and for taking the time to help them. Let me add some context to why these gaps exist.
ZIMSTAT’s 2025 figures show that only 11.2% of Zimbabwean households have a computer at home. Schools face similar constraints: the 2022 chart shows a national average of 84 pupils per computer in primary schools and 35 in secondary schools. In Mashonaland Central, the primary school ratio was 148 pupils per computer. How much time does that leave each child to practise?
There’s also a perception that Zimbabwe is awash with graduates. Yet only 6.8% of people aged three and above who had ever attended school had completed tertiary education. That isn’t an adults-only measure, but it gives some perspective. Even among those with tertiary education, only 62.1% reported using a computer and use doesn’t necessarily mean proficiency in Word, Excel or PowerPoint.
“But we have smartphones,” you might say. Have we bothered to ask what people actually do with them?
ZIMSTAT’s 2025 digital activity figures offer some context. Among people aged 15–35, 44.4% participated in social networking, but only 8.7% used spreadsheet software and 8.1% edited documents, spreadsheets, or presentations using digital tools. These figures cover digital activities across devices, but they show why access alone doesn’t establish workplace skills.
I think there’s a business opportunity here: practical, private computer skills tutoring for professionals, built around their everyday tasks: reports, budgets, spreadsheets, and presentations.
When I was in college, I had a side business preparing reports for executives. The demand never went away. Your experience is another reminder of that gap and the value of taking the time to teach.

We talk startups in Zimbabwe, but what actually counts as one or an incubator? 🇿🇼
We built 2 self-checks based on Kenya's proposed Startup Bill. Does your favourite qualify? Screenshots welcome! 👀

We usually measure digital transformation in decades.
But what happens in 60 seconds tells a much bigger story.
From AI adoption to terabytes of mobile data, here is what a single minute looks like in Zimbabwean tech. 🇿🇼

1/ Zimbabwe has ~300–400 commercial bank branches.
One bread company has been reported running about 300 delivery trucks.Every morning they deliver stock on credit, collect cash at the door, and move it back to the depot in sealed safes the driver can't open.
5/ And the data is what banks should envy. A bank sees a retailer's deposit once a week. The bread truck knows exactly how much stock that retailer takes every morning and whether last week's invoice was paid.
Zimbabwe doesn't have a merchant banking problem.
The infrastructure already exists. It just belongs to bread companies.

1/Sue Nyathi's novel The Polygamist now the Netflix show everyone's watching called it "infidelity, sanitised as marriage." Set it in Zimbabwe and asked one thing the drama never answers, is marriage actually safe?Zimbabwe's latest health data answers her. 🧵

3/Why are married women the least protected?
Because marriage isn't always sexually exclusive.
In Zimbabwe's latest survey, married men were 21 times more likely than married women to report having multiple sexual partners.
