Dear citizens of South Korea, My name is Lieutenant Colonel Yoo Seon-min. I served in the Special Warfare Command of the South Korean Army. Today, I stand before you with a heavy heart and a strong determination to speak out. I am speaking on behalf of the 320,000 men and women serving in our Army. The Lee Jae-myung government has called the December 3, 2024 martial law incident an insurrection. Because of this, many soldiers who followed their orders have been accused of serious crimes. Some have been punished, while others are still facing trials. I believe this is deeply unfair. At the same time, soldiers who refused to follow orders have received special promotions. To me, this sends a terrible message to our military. It has damaged the trust, discipline, and morale of our armed forces. I also believe that the current government is using the December 3 incident for political purposes. I am deeply concerned about the influence of pro-North Korean and pro-Chinese political groups, and I fear for the future of freedom and democracy in South Korea. Our country has reached a point where soldiers who devoted their lives to protecting the nation are being treated like criminals. Those who speak out are afraid of being punished. This is not the country I dedicated my life to defending. For 21 years, I proudly served in the military. I was willing to risk my life to protect my country and its people. During the December 3 incident, I carried out what I believed were my duties as a soldier. But today, I am being treated as a criminal. I believe the accusations against me are unfair and politically motivated. I believe the current government is destroying the foundation of our military. Our soldiers deserve respect, fair treatment, and the protection of the law. Many respected generals and officers have lost their positions, their honor, and their financial security. Some are still fighting legal battles. These were soldiers who served their country for many years and earned the respect of their fellow service members. Today, many of them and their families are suffering. And yet, most active-duty soldiers remain silent. Why?Because they are afraid.They fear losing their careers, their positions, and their futures if they speak openly.The trust between military leaders and their soldiers has been seriously damaged. A military cannot function without discipline, trust, and a clear chain of command. Soldiers must follow lawful orders, but they must also be treated fairly under the law. I believe that some people have taken advantage of this situation for personal and political gain. I also believe that military promotions have been influenced by political opinions rather than military service and ability. This is deeply troubling. Today, I want to speak directly to the 51 million people of South Korea and to our active-duty soldiers and military reservists. Our military exists to protect our country, our freedom, and our people. Our soldiers must serve according to the Constitution and the law. But when soldiers are sent into a difficult situation, they deserve a fair investigation and the right to defend themselves. They should not become political targets simply because they carried out what they believed to be their duties. If our country fails to treat its soldiers fairly, how can we expect them to act with confidence during the next national emergency? I believe the Lee Jae-myung government has seriously damaged the honor of our military. But I also believe that the truth will eventually come out. and I believe that justice will prevail. I will not remain silent. I will continue to speak out against what I believe is unfair treatment and an abuse of government power. I will stand up for the honor of our soldiers and for the principles of freedom, justice, and democracy. I believe in a strong South Korea. I believe in the friendship and military alliance between South Korea and the United States. @DrTaraO
