AI trained on bad reasoning examples (e.g. logical fallacies) will reproduce them at inference, because it can’t yet interact with the world to build causal models and test what it has learned. Children can, says Alison Gopnik of UC Berkeley. People often say that AI imitating our statistical patterns is the same thing that human children do to learn. But is it really? Still, it’s an open question how much our understanding of the external world actually shapes good human reasoning. There are plenty of examples of biased, irrational thinking. Perhaps statistical representations are enough?

"The computer was not made in the image of the person," the anthropologist Edwin Hutchins wrote in Cognition in the Wild in 1995. "The computer was made in the image of the formal manipulations of abstract symbols. And the last 30 years of cognitive science can be seen as attempts to remake the person in the image of the computer." The first time I read this line it felt intuitive, but I think we’re approaching a precipice where this changes, where the computer begins to remake itself through our concepts. Its form factor will shift again. We will more and more encounter computation "in the wild," and our common reference points, the personal computer, the discrete device, or even discrete program, may become only one of its manifestations among many.

Replying to @DanSeligson
Absolutely. I first wrote about them in 2013 (quantamagazine.org/as-machin…), in the vein of "there's these things called 'neural networks' that really seem to be working well all of a sudden, where might this lead?"
