Clickbait has saturated the market. Cheap drive-by discourse is a dime a dozen. People are weary of autoplay nonsense and being yelled at by the Internet. That stock is falling. What stock is rising? Thoughtfulness. Paragraphs. Fresh insight. Very soon attention farming will be seen the way ad banks are today. I truly believe this.

I'll see Aaron's spicy take and raise him a spicy take: Polygamy will go nowhere among normie evangelicals, but it very well might see some growth among Dissident Right-types, who tend to pit 'natural law" against biblical theology and romanticize pre-Christian sex norms
I believe we are going to see more and more Protestant churches affirm polygamy. It's actually not a huge step once you adopt the sort of hyper-literal Biblicism that's already the de facto approac in that world. It won't be the mainstream view, but could get traction.

I was asked to give a lecture next week at a church in Minnesota on what I see as the most pressing issues facing Christians. Here's my rundown I'm working on for my lecture. — The beginning of life: Reproduction and human dignity. — The manufacture of life: Genetic engineering and designer children. — The simulation of life: Artificial intelligence and digital personhood. — The enhancement of life: Transhumanism and human augmentation. — The embodiment of life: Biological sex and bodily identity. — The commodification of life: Surrogacy and reproductive markets. — The manipulation of life: Surveillance, algorithms, and human agency. — The extension of life: Longevity and the pursuit of immortality. — The quality of life: Disability, dependency, and the meaning of dignity. — The end of life: Assisted suicide and euthanasia. In a word: bioethics. The central moral question of our age is increasingly whether human nature is a gift to be received, enhanced beyond our native capacities, or a problem to be solved. Christians need to be prepared to answer it. I am confident that our doctrine of the imago Dei, coupled with the Christian natural law tradition, provides a sufficient basis and bulwark to guide civilization, if civilization will entertain them.

This reminds me that the Wolfean Christian Nationalism project suffers from a deep internal contradiction of virtues. It markets itself as a retrieval project rooted in history while the actual tradition it claims to retrieve stresses due respect for elders and orderly humility under institutional authority. What we actually see is the opposite. A cavalier and individualistic dismissal of institutional authority, flippant dishonoring of our spiritual elders, and a hypocritical, whiny, victim mentality when critics push back. That isn't the posture of the tradition. The Reformed tradition is one of *reform*, not an anabaptist revolt from authority. What’s going on right now is a revolutionary/activism mentality fueled by acerbic disrespect for elders and institutions. Perhaps springing from insecurity, bitterness, pride, or something else, what’s clear is that they don’t respect the churches they seek to control. Young elders write their books and host their podcasts while tweeting contempt for the authorities over them and beside them. Sometimes even the very courts they are subject to. Anonymous activists build their websites and post all day on social media with little more than division and scandal as their goal. They loudly and proudly proclaim themselves to be the saviors of these godly institutions while, five minutes later, expressing their disdain for what they’re supposedly saving. Often with words laced with vile language. It's a movement aiming for deconstruction by conquest rather than reform by moral suasion and brotherly correction. It's the political theological equivalent of street protesters throwing Molotov cocktails at historical buildings and defacing monuments. It’s more anabaptist or Alinsky than magisterial reformer. Ironically, a project claiming to recover the past is functionally marked by modern traits, very much "in the spirit of the age." And when you begin to look closer, the old maxim “the medium is the message” becomes more and more true.
Perhaps this is part of the problem, Stephen. Young men in the church should not be belittled, demonized, or provoked to anger. Younger teachers of the Word can also be learned from. Absolutely. They should be encouraged rather than belittled. But I’m also reminded of Rehoboam. He rejected the counsel of the elders for the advice of the young men he grew up with, and it split the kingdom (1 Kings 12). Young men are said to be prone to zeal rather than knowledge and wisdom. Young men can be exceptional teachers and leaders and older men can be foolish and stubborn. But both human nature and the nature of spiritual maturity speak to the normative wisdom in looking to those with more experience. The church didn't name its leaders "presbyters" by accident.

It’s a different (worse) version of Disney pivoting to serve higher income, childless adults in their park offerings and the themes of their story (kids don’t care this much about trauma and angst about your parents). Eventually it will all go the way of opera, no new fans.

Unpopular opinion: investigative journalism is a valuable thing but not irreplaceable. Decline of reporting is not really a moral phenomenon (“people are just tribal and don’t care”) but is more about the way the Internet has completely changed accessibility of information.

Basically I think demand for the kind of longform investigative journalism that characterized media for most of 20th century has bottomed out, not because of indifference, but because so much is instantly broadcast through digital platforms.

They say the worst thing that can happen to a gambler is a big win early on in his career. I wonder how different Christianity Today's fortunes would be today if the Driscoll pod hadn't been a big hit that made the "policing evangelical scandal" beat feel like a viable identity

If he really did watch that Rams-Cardinals game for 45 minutes, I think he's been punished enough.
🇺🇸 In Virginia, a 64-year-old man was charged after he taped his wife to a chair in the basement so he could watch football upstairs. Terry Ward was arrested last Sunday night in Richmond after officers responded to a domestic call. According to the criminal complaint, his wife said he used tape to restrain her to a chair in the basement. Ward admitted he tied her up and left her there. She had marks and tape residue on both arms and told police she had been restrained for up to 45 minutes. He faces felony abduction and misdemeanor assault on a family member He is due in court on November 10.

Season is over. Stafford's Rams career is (likely) over. Man.
Rams HC Sean McVay told reporters that WR Davante Adams ruptured his hamstring and now will be sidelined 6-10 weeks.

Someone could probably write a book (if they haven’t already) about the cycle of technology productizing the removal of friction in the name of convenience only for us to discover that the friction was a load-bearing part of the social compact.

Studio-mandated reshoots = never a good sign. “[One source] says people at Netflix think the movie is ‘awful’ ... A second source, who attended a test screening over the summer, compared the movie to Disney’s 2018 A Wrinkle in Time, which reportedly lost close to $100 million.”

Before you dismiss it as "cringe," consider the possibility that Christian churches are among the last remaining institutions that value in-person friendship. Tech-fueled alienation between the sexes isn't going to get better with more articles. There's real work that can happen
Christian dating today can be a WILD experience. My sister-in-law has a great site for Reformed singles. It's called "Don't Waste Your Date" and it's for adults who are complementarian and a member of a 9Marks-friendly church. Highly recommend! dontwasteyourdate.com

The 2005 Narnia film was similar to Jackson's LOTR trilogy in its post-9/11 earnestness and belief in (not just love for) the source material. I don't think Gerwig is trying to disrespect Lewis or the story. IMO she's bringing detached Millennial energy, which is already stale
