Watching The Experiment on Channel 4 brought back conversations I'd had many years ago.
A nursing sister I worked alongside at Nuffield told me about disturbing practices she'd personally witnessed while working at De La Pole Hospital in East Yorkshire.
I've also heard troubling accounts concerning Brandesburton Hospital.
These are accounts shared with me, rather than allegations I've independently verified, but they've stayed with me.
Britain has its own history of institutionalising disabled people, and this programme reminded me why dignity, choice and independent living matter so much.
Care should never mean control.
