Older people are too often spoken about rather than listened to.
In this second Hidden Voices event, End Social Care Disgrace brings together experts, campaigners and people with lived experience to explore the challenges facing older people and how we can build a society that values dignity, independence and high-quality social care.
In this discussion you'll hear from:
Neil Duncan Jordan MP Labour MP for Poole, member of the APPG for Older People and former UNISON Regional Officer.
Professor Alisoun Milne Emeritus Professor in Social Gerontology and Social Work at the University of Kent, discussing "The Neo-liberal Market and Harms to Older People."
Marianne Lynch Sharing her family's experience of fighting to secure care and support for her father. Gordon Peters Former Director of Social Care, speaking about self-organising around mild cognitive impairment.
Councillor David Jenkins Chair of the Leeds Age Friendly Board, exploring what it means to build truly age-friendly communities.
Throughout this conversation we explore:
The realities facing older people in today's social care system. The impact of market-led care on people's lives. Living with cognitive impairment.
The experiences of unpaid carers and families.
How communities can become more age-friendly.
Why older people's voices must be central to future social care reform.
Thank you to everyone who joined us live and to our fantastic speakers for sharing their expertise and lived experience.

I’ve spent years sounding the alarm about ableism, dehumanisation and the lessons of Aktion T4.
@Channel4’s The Experiment has taken the message further.
I’ve done my best for us autistic and disabled people.
Now it’s time to rest.
I’ll still be advocating.

There are only 671k jobs too, most are in care - and the majority of YP are too immature to do this work. Others need professional experience that work experience in a supermarket won’t provide.

Austerity, cuts do not work.
£70bn is not their saving - it's the total forecast bill. Their actual £36bn plan = £3.2bn two-child limit (puts 450k kids back in poverty) + £9.5bn non-citizen ban + £12bn PIP mental health cut that IFS says is "difficult in extreme".
Warwick research: every £1 cut in HB costs 53-75p in temp accommodation. You don't save - you shift cost to councils, NHS (MHSDS), and homelessness.
Maybe 1% of disabled people manage to work.
DWPs own website has 16 jobs for disabled people nationally.

Public service doesn’t mean you’re never allowed downtime.
Andy Burnham spends an evening with his mate raising money for Stand Up To Cancer and people lose their minds.
I hope anyone who applauded Farage or Dorries going into the jungle applies the same standard.
Thank for starting with the accessibility Hels. however bouncing captions and videos zooming in and out are no more accessible then leaving them out, perhaps you might take a lesson in digital accessibility.
This weapon is a member of the commons health committee and wants to cut benefits, where does he think that leaves people, pushed into other extremely overwhelmed other services. Perhaps check your brief before you spout your Leader's nonsense, imagine people believing he has them in mind over health....
Burnham's first Budget next week and no plans to cut the benefits bill. That's because Labour is the Welfare Party.
He should adopt Conservative plans to Get Britain Working by:
Rolling out Back To Work prepaid cards
Reforming sick notes
Introducing face-to-face reassessments
Implementing the Get to Work Programme
Halving under-25s NIC contributions

No wonder @Nigel_Farage is running a party full of nonces, traitors, and racists
It’s so over
I sincerely hope that all the window lickers who donated or bought the footy shirts remain in societal comatose
Backward people deserve backwards treatment

Here's a thread of evidence that "back to work" schemes for the welfare claimants targeted (LCWRA/ESA) don't work
They're a waste of money & resource & inflict disappointment &/or distress on the majority targeted
When you're too ill to work, you're too ill to work. Who knew 🙃

Here's Iain Porter of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation telling the Work & Pensions Committee on 14 July 2025 that Employment Support for chronically ill & disabled people "at most will see 1, 2, or 3% of those millions of disabled people impacted by cuts getting into work"

I thought it was powerful and mostly well done. I thought the end was rushed - I’d have got rid of the safe space part because those questions could have been incorporated into other areas, freeing up more time for the sterilisation part, which didn’t get enough time IMO.

I also would have liked more reflection from the participants on why they thought it was ok, and where those thoughts and feelings came from.
Overall though, the people who need to hear the message are unlikely to watch it.

It was terrifying.
We've watched the MSM and the Govs over the last few years use identical narratives and propaganda the Nazis used.
Those who agreed with, esp, "the savings" only tried to save themselves when told the truth.
That was disturbing and disgusting.

I watched The Experiment on Channel 4, and I genuinely wasn't prepared for how much it would affect me.
I've deliberately kept this video as raw and honest as possible, with very little editing and hardly any background blurring. I wanted to share my thoughts exactly as they came, without polishing away the emotion. Sometimes what you have to say matters far more than how a video looks.
The historical footage of Nazi atrocities against disabled people was deeply upsetting. But what frightened me just as much was watching how easily people could be persuaded that separating disabled people from society was somehow an act of protection.
As a disabled woman and disability rights advocate, the programme brought back conversations about institutional care in East Yorkshire, including accounts shared with me by a nursing sister who had worked at De La Pole Hospital.
It also made me reflect on the importance of independent living, the assisted dying debate, inappropriate DNACPR decisions during COVID, and the language we use when talking about disabled people.
This isn't a political speech or a television review. It's my personal reaction to a programme that left me deeply unsettled.
There is a huge difference between protecting disabled people and protecting society from disabled people.
I'd genuinely like to hear your thoughts. Did The Experiment leave you feeling uncomfortable too?
Please keep the discussion respectful.
