We are deeply saddened to share the news that Perry Mehrling passed away this morning at the age of 67.
Perry was the father of the Young Scholars Initiative. He believed profoundly in young scholars, in their ideas, and in the importance of creating a community in which they could learn from one another and find their own voices.
Perry, you leave an enormous hole in our midst. Our hearts are aching, and we will miss you dearly.
The YSI community will carry your legacy forward. Your ideas, your generosity, and your commitment to generations of young scholars will remain with us.
Thank you for everything, Perry.

For those unfamilar with the Eurozone: one of its most interesting aspects is the fact that each member state mints its own coins with its own designs on one side, but they can be used and thus circulate across the entire region. So sometimes you check your pocket and find this famous Da Vinci design from Italy, the Irish harp, Athena's owl that was also depicted on Ancient Greek coins more than two millenia ago or, very often, the German eagle. Now that Bulgaria adopted the common currency, it is only a matter of time before every citizen of the zone will have possessed a Bulgarian coin at some point.

Tomorrow Bulgaria joins the euro area. For 25 years we have outsourced decisions on monetary policy to Frankfurt by pegging the Bulgarian Lev to the euro. Now we join the decision-making of the world second most important currency. Lets make the best of it. 🇧🇬🇪🇺

Did you know? As a result of Bulgaria’s accession to the EU, all new 💶 euro banknote designs since 2013 feature the word “euro” in the Latin (EURO), Greek (EYPΩ), and Cyrillic (EBPO) alphabets.
Bulgaria 🇧🇬 will adopt the euro on 1 January 2026.

The fact that there is no leader on this currency is a welcome sign and one that is being undervalued in discussions on the topic.
It’s a symbolic gesture, but an important one.

In 2026, the ECB will choose a new design for Euro banknotes.
The plan is to move away from the abstract, imagined bridges, arches and towards depicting great figures from European history like da Vinci or Marie Skłodowska-Curie.
The EU is becoming more culturally conscious.

What does the EU import from Mercosur?
This is a hot topic, and people may be missing some of the facts.
EU countries import from Mercosur key products that are not produced locally or that Europe needs in large quantities.
The main product Europe gets from Mercosur is crude oil from Brazil. Other key imports include soybean meal (animal feed), wood pulp, coffee, copper, iron ore, and tobacco.
Top 10 EU imports from Mercosur
🛢️ Crude petroleum — $10.40
🌱 Soybean meal — $7.08
☕ Coffee — $3.40
🌾 Soybeans — $3.22
🪵 Sulfate chemical wood pulp — $2.86
🧲 Copper ore — $2.53
🪨 Iron ore — $1.76
🧃 Fruit juice — $1.72
⚙️ Ferroalloys — $1.27
⛽ Refined petroleum — $1.27
Trade between the EU and Mercosur has recently been relatively balanced, with each bloc sending and receiving about $60 billion in exports to and from the other.
For the EU, this represents less than 1% of its total trade (of about $6.7 trillion) and roughly 2.2% of its external trade (trade with non-EU countries).
However, the products that Europe exports to Mercosur tend to be among the most sophisticated goods Europe produces (medicines, vehicle parts, electric generators, etc.). This makes trade between these two blocs more complementary than, for instance, trade between Europe and China, which is often tech-versus-tech.
Top EU exports to Mercosur
⛽ Refined petroleum — $3.92
💉 Vaccines, blood, antisera, toxins & cultures — $3.91
🚗 Motor vehicles; parts & accessories — $3.22
💊 Packaged medicaments — $3.10
🚘 Cars — $1.54
🧪 Nitrogen heterocyclic compounds — $1.10
⚙️ Gas turbines — $1.07
✈️ Planes, helicopters & spacecraft — $0.93
🔩 Transmissions — $0.84
🌀 Centrifuges — $0.73

This frozen assets thing is getting totally ridiculous. The point is not to know whether it's legal or not, it's whether the EU is willing to take that risk or not.
Getting rid of sophisticated financial engineering would also be useful: either take the risk or fund Ukraine & 1/2
I strongly endorse the letter by Belgian academics in @lesoir arguing that using Russian Central Bank assets frozen in Belgium to support Ukraine is legally sound:
1. Belgium's initial opposition to using these assets for a reparations loan was understandable. But now that the Commission has provided financial guarantees, fears about arbitration risk under Belgium's investment treaty with Russia appear inflated by @Bart_DeWever and are paralysing necessary action.
2. The reality is that Russia has had the option to file claims since 2022 and hasn't. Multiple defenses exist.
3. Any hypothetical award would be unenforceable in the EU, and Belgium's vulnerable assets in third countries are limited. The Commission guarantees joint Member State and EU coverage of any compensation.
The legal risk is manageable, far less than the moral and strategic risk of inaction.
Time to choose legal courage over legal paralysis in the face of Russian aggression.
