That's a wrap, folks! CEC21 is over, but the critical global discussions will continue! #DiscussCEC All plenary recordings can be found here: ce-conference.org/plenary-li… We are looking forward to keeping the conversation going! @IASS_Potsdam @DiscussCEC

CO2 already in the atmosphere might well exceed the 1.5°C budget. And barring a human-extinguishing global catastrophe there's no instantaneous 100% decarbonization. So, yes, we do need to talk about rising climate risk including the implications of "overshoot". #ClimateAction
There is a ~40% chance that past emissions already push the planet beyond 1.5°C, even with *no* future emissions. We really need to a) reduce emissions very quickly, and b) develop negative emission technologies for 1.5°C to remain an option.

“These are potentially beneficial but also potentially harmful technologies, so we need to be very careful and err on the side of being precautionary,” says @ICCCAD’s @SaleemulHuq in this session for the 2nd Gobeshona Global Conference: carnegiecouncil.co/3N5YQPQ

Should the world consider solar radiation modification in light of the latest @IPCC_CH findings? IPCC’s Thelma Krug joins us for this #C2GTalk: carnegiecouncil.co/3GCrA09
The carbon removal market does not exist. Yet. Currently, buying durable removals works the same way as supporting creators on platforms like Kickstarter or Indiegogo. New article by me on @illuminemNews illuminem.com/energyvoices/d…

@FHBBiermann explaining why solar geoengineer is both dangerous and unnecessary @SolarGeoeng at the Planet und Gesellschaft meeting. Looking forward to joining him in Stockholm for an event on the political impacts of the SDGs earthsystemgovernance.org/ev… @ESG_SDG @ESG_Project

The text adopted by @EP_Environment for the ESR Regulation adds some new language on carbon dioxide removal: - a call for clarity on technical solutions "to enhance such removals" - strong statements on priority of emission reduction #Fitfor55

"By 1 January 2025, the EC shall present report to EP [...] how negative emissions [...] can be covered by emissions trading."
ENVI Committee in the EP voted for sequenced approach for integrating CDR into #EU ETS. The adopted text proposes a Commission report by 2025 and a new legislative proposal. Interestingly, CDR is also referred to as an option to increase mitigation ambition until 2030. #Fitfor55

CDR = critical tool to achieving net zero. It will be awhile before we begin to tackle legacy emissions. Today’s investments will be required for getting to the gigaton-scale needed to counterbalance the truly hard to decarbonize sectors. energy.gov/articles/biden-ad…

There have been several new initiatives aiming to advance solar geoengineering (SG) in climate policy. It would not be a stretch to say that SG advocates (yes, advocates) might be winning the day. Before debate gets too far, let’s be clear about *why* that's the case. THREAD 1/11

“Some CDR will be unavoidable to counterbalance hard-to-abate residual emissions,” says @AITAsia’s @joyashree9 in this #C2GLearn which explores how #CO2 removal is addressed in the @IPCC_CH CAR6 WGIII report. carnegiecouncil.co/3lbQt9f

The goal of net zero emissions has diffused rapidly across almost all political levels. @FelixSchenuit & @Oliver_Geden explain why a better understanding of how the EU addresses CDR politically is required 👇👇👇 swp-berlin.org/publications/…

I'm excited to start working with @FECMgov - so many great people thinking seriously about equity in rapid decarbonization, and about how we can make carbon removal just & sustainable. Also, I'm glad that @UBCAS is supportive of its faculty spending time in public service! 💚
Meet Dr. Holly Buck who is joining #FECM’s Division of Strategic Engagement within the Office of Carbon Management. She will support high-priority justice and engagement efforts across FECM. Learn more: bit.ly/3vbMxuU #EmployeeAppreciation

The German government ist getting serious about residual emissions and CCS. In its new draft climate action program, it stresses the need to further develop CC(U)S, also in the context of carbon dioxide removal.
