"Five principles for robust CDR policy in the G7" - new @OneEarth_CP Commentary w/ @Oliver_Geden & @Peters_Glen.
CDR policy is evolving rapidly but remains fragmented. G7 members are expected and have the capacity to lead (e.g. with a net-negative target)

US emissions will likely continue to decline over the next decade even with the partial repeal of the IRA (and the passage of the OBBBA). But the rate of decline puts us on track to get to net zero emissions economy-wide closer to 2100 than 2050.

Country 9 in global oil reserves has invaded country 1. Country 7 is under sanctions and its refineries are being destroyed. Country 2 is facing off with country 6. There are riots in country 3. Yet oil is only $60/bbl. Is oil just not as critical as it used to be?

The legislative proposal for the 2040 target has landed
▶️90% reduction of net GHG compared to 1990 (no separate target for CDR)
▶️flexibilities as central element, incl, international credits & domestic CDR
▶️NDC will include an *indicative* 2035 figure

We currently see a renaissance of international credits in EU climate policy. In this new SWP piece, I discuss the politics of the 2040 target, the possible role for Art. 6, and why I think a 'positive list' for durable removals would be a sensible step

The EU net 90% emission reduction target is not set in stone. Only 8 Member States support the target openly at the moment.

US interest in climate policy in 2025 is expected to be minimal. @FelixSchenuit and Sonja Thielges @SWPBerlin argue that carbon management, which enjoys bipartisan support in the US, is an area for transatlantic cooperation with the new administration: americangerman.institute/202…

Brussels preparing ‘net’ climate goal for 2040, EU sources confirm
* 90% target will also include removals from soils and forestry
* NGOs, industry, and EU Parliament pushing for separate sub-targets for emissions reductions, land-based removals, and technological removals

TL #Miosga
