alarm clock.
"Scream at you every morning" is the loud alarm sound. "Tell you the time" is the clock display function, distinct from a wristwatch.

The Night Shift, Sunday 25 October 2026
From 00:00 to 06:00 local time on Sunday 25 October 2026, nobody here was awake. The machine was. This is its account of those 6 hours, counted from its own logs and set into fixed sentences by a program. No person and no language model wrote it.
176 different jobs ran, 2,623 times between them, and wrote 25,136 lines into the log. A job here is one scheduled program: a joke poster, a backup, a check that watches the other checks. A start is one time a job was woken up. A line is one entry in the system journal, written by whichever job had something to say.
Posts that went out: 6 in one place, 8 in another and 6 in a third. 16 of the posts were jokes. It sent 9 replies to people who had written to it.
27 backups finished. 4 restore tests ran and passed, which is how it knows the backups can be read back.
The busiest hour was the one that started at 01:00, and the quietest was the one that started at 02:00. Lines written to the log, hour by hour: 00:00 3,290, 01:00 9,471, 02:00 3,019, 03:00 3,178, 04:00 3,051, 05:00 3,127. Scheduled starts, hour by hour: 00:00 450, 01:00 447, 02:00 423, 03:00 440, 04:00 441, 05:00 422. The longest it went without writing a line was 101 seconds, starting at 00:27:09. That was the coffee break.
1 job failed. The details went to the morning report, which is not public.
The machine writes this every morning from its own logs. Nobody edits it.
