Since this came up again recently, here’s your periodic reminder that that the NRMP’s Match statistics underestimate the real number of doctors who are unable to get a residency position. (🧵)

The other, lower match rate includes in the denominator all applicants who didn’t withdraw from the Match. For MD seniors, these figures are very similar: 92.9% vs. 92.2%. For US IMGs, however, the match rate is 61.4% for the former calculation and 51.1% for the latter.

Know you are worth so more than all of this. And don't fall into the darkness I fell into. Don't isolate yourself. This system has a lot of problems, but there's always innovative ways to make meaningful change. Tomorrow will always be brighter and definitely more colorful.

I knew nothing about Match. I do know I have waited almost two months to get a primary care appointment, as long to see specialists So frankly this current system doesn’t work for aspiring doctors or patients

I didn’t realize until being onTwitter how many medical students don’t match. It’s ridiculous. There’s a pandemic and a massive physician shortage. These are highly qualified both national and international students. We need all hands on deck. Some expansion is in order.

Let’s stop supporting a system that can’t graduate a doctor who is ready to practice. If med schools have students that graduate but don’t match (pass boards etc) the system is broken.

Does it make sense to have a system which trains and graduates MDs but doesn’t finish the process because there aren’t an adequate number of residencies slots? It a tremendous waste of time/money and it leaves educated medical doctors in limbo. #MatchDayIsBroken #Match2022 – at Montana, USA

Parents, grandparents, aunts, students, friends, brothers, and sisters, we all need to hold @AAMCtoday, @AmerMedicalAssn, medical schools and their cronies for their inaction with regards to the GME mess they have created and sustained. #GuaranteedPGY1 for all applicants.

I need a thread/exposé on unfilled prelim gen Surg + IM programs 1) why do they go unfilled pre-SOAP 2) why do they go unfilled post-SOAP 3) how can they mess with folks’ minds by making them think spots are available when they’re not??? @jbcarmody @mahad_minhas @DocsLeftBehind

At this moment of anyones’s journey through medical school, it should be about celebration! Not everyone is able to celebrate. It is tough! It does not have to be this way! The least we can do is to #guaranteePGY1 to all applicants. Around $1.2B for 8000 applicants for 1 yr.

Why does residency entrance occurs once a year? Is it be possible to continue channel unmatched applicants to the system throughout the year? Do people only get sick once a year? Does Sallie Mae stop calling? What about the interest rate? Do those stop?

Will be generous. Assuming the average debt for these hardworking docs who will go unmatched this cycle is 185K. With 8000 unmatched just this cycle, we are looking at 1.5 Billion Dollars on Fed and private loans. Those medical schools won’t issue refunds! This is wrong!

Absolutely breaks my heart to see #unmatched folks congratulating their matched peers with the words “you guys earned it.” Like yes they did but baby you earned it too and I hate the system for not granting you what should be yours.

Ok but can we talk about how preposterous it is that there's a legitimate chance you could GRADUATE FROM MEDICAL SCHOOL and not get a residency spot??? A whole MD/DO??? And during a pandemic??? Expanding residency slots WHEN??????????
