Burnham demands answers as 12,000 Poundland jobs at risk. Here's one: when you tax business to death, you kill jobs.

Replying to @DannyBeales
Yes, it's terrible. But almost inevitable. Play socialist games, win socialist prizes. Asking businesses to pay more for staff, energy, tax etc, and then acting horrified when they tell you they are no longer viable.

Axeing standing charges on #energy bills does not save you £45 a year. Unless you never use any fuel. Because it will all go on your unit cost. Smoke & mirrors in Labours #budget. #Healey

The Chancellor will remove import taxes on gherkins and marmalade to give British families more breathing space in their weekly budget. I am sat here wantonly dipping my gherkin in my marmalade feel grateful and blessed Cunts

How any Chancellor can look at the state of the economy, the job losses, struggling businesses and sectors like Hospitality, and think, let’s increase their wage bills AGAIN… is totally beyond me. This is a deliberate demolition of small businesses. RIP THE ECONOMY 🪦
EXCLUSIVE John Healey will announce plans to increase the minimum wage by nearly 4 per cent but slow the rise for young people after warnings that they are being priced out of jobs The Times has been told that the national living wage, which applies to those aged 21 and over, is expected to rise from £12.71 to around £13.20 — an increase of 3.9 per cent However, Healey has decided not to repeat the big rises of the past two budgets in the national minimum wage, which applies to those aged 18 to 21 It will rise broadly in line with the rate for older workers - from £10.85 to around £11.27, an increase of 3.9 per cent It effectively spells the end of Labour’s manifesto pledge to bring the “discriminatory” minimum wage for young people into line with the living wage for older workers in this parliament The minimum wage increased by 26 per cent between 2025 and 2026, leading to stark warnings from employers that it risked impeding efforts to get 1 million “Neets” - young people not in education, employment or training - into work. Healey alluded to the approach in an interview with The Times last week, in which he spoke of the importance of the “trade-off between the level of the minimum wage and the employment rate” thetimes.com/article/c9142a2…

Much punchier accusations from Sir Malcolm Rifkind - a former defence and foreign secretary: "I choose my words very carefully. I think this week Donald Trump has shown himself as a person to be repulsive; as a President of the United States to be a disgrace to his own people as well as to his international responsibilities. "We all know his actual reasons for this are a grubby attempt to win a few more votes in the midterms by trying to get oil prices down. "In order to achieve that, he has not only betrayed Ukraine in the middle of a war, fighting for its very existence, but he is also directly - not indirectly - directly responsible for the deaths of many Ukrainians who will not now be protected by the attempts that have been successfully made using intelligence provided indirectly by the United States." teapawt.net/breeallegretti/status/…

Andy Burnham has just made an outrageous statement at PMQs, potentially one of the worst gaffes I have ever witnessed from a Prime Minister. He has presumed Joshua Kerry guilty of murdering Ann Widdecombe before he has even stood trial, live on national TV, for a global audience to witness. These were his exact words, “could I start just by recognising, with the charges that have been laid against the individual responsible for the murder of Ann Widdecombe” Read that again. He didn't say the individual accused of her murder. He said the individual responsible for her murder. Whatever your views on Joshua Kerry, the public does not know all the facts. That is precisely why we have criminal trials. A man is innocent until proven guilty. That principle applies to everyone, without exception. Yet the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom has just publicly spoken as though a man awaiting trial has already been convicted of murder. For Andy Burnham to make such a serious error while discussing matter involving ongoing legal proceedings is deeply concerning.

‘Effective immediate’ Trump wrote on ‘Truth Social’ at the weekend. ‘There is an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Both sides have agreed.’ Not a single word of that post is true. There is no energy ceasefire. It is not effective immediate. Ukraine has agreed in principle. But Trump’s pal Putin has not. Pal Putin refused when Trump last said there was an energy ceasefire (Sept 14 — bollocks then, bollocks now). Russia is still trying to cripple Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in advance of winter. There have been 196 Russian attacks on Ukrainian electricity in the past week. They continue. Over 20 attacks on Ukrainian oil and gas. They continue. And 153 Ukrainians, mainly civilians, killed in these and other attacks on residential areas. Yet Trump calls for Zelensky to be deposed, blames him for war continuing, high energy prices (NOT his failing war on Iran!). Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Don’t let Burnham pretend everything was great before Thatcher. The 70s meant inflation up to 24%, a three day week due to lack of energy, an IMF bailout, the ‘winter of discontent,’ body bags uncollected & rubbish piling up in the streets of Britain as ‘the weak man of Europe!’

Exceptionally strong stance and statement by UEFA in opposition to Gianni Infantino’s proposal. Calling out that “it is not a ‘democratic decision’, but governance by intimidation - an act of coercion” and would mean “every decision shaping the future of football is no longer driven by what best serves the game, but by what best serves shareholders.” Wrapped up beautifully by this mic drop: “UEFA national teams will not participate in any FIFA competition for so long as these proposals remain alive, unless this proposal has been abandoned in its entirety and binding assurances have been given that FIFA will never again open its governance or competitions to private ownership. “Nobody should be in any doubt: UEFA and its national associations will oppose these plans with absolute determination. “There are moments when institutions are judged not by what they are prepared to accept, but by what they refuse to compromise. This is one of those moments. Some things are simply too important to sell. The FIFA World Cup belongs to football. It always will.”

Disgusting. The University of Aberdeen says it is “looking into” comments made by employee Heather Herbert after she publicly celebrated the death of former MP Ann Widdecombe. Responding to the announcement, Herbert wrote: “Some good news for once. I hope it was an extremely painful death.” She then added: “I hope she was handcuffed to the bed as she screamed in agony.” A local report says Herbert offered no apology when questioned, while the university confirmed it was examining the matter. You can disagree with every political position Ann Widdecombe ever held. You can criticise her record, her beliefs and her words. But publicly fantasising about a 78-year-old woman being restrained and screaming in agony is not political criticism. It is grotesque. The University of Aberdeen now needs to decide whether this conduct meets the standards it expects from somebody publicly identified as one of its employees. And “looking into it” cannot simply become the usual holding statement until the outrage disappears. #AnnWiddecombe #UniversityOfAberdeen #PoliticalViolence #PublicStandards #UKPolitics

Two Metropolitan Police officers tracked down a man in a pub over social media posts criticising a local councillor’s decision to ban outside seating alongside the Thames. They acknowledged he had committed no crime, yet warned him about the law on harassment. If no offence had been committed, should police be using their time to warn people over lawful political criticism?

This is an outrageous, disgraceful smear on John Healey — and an outright lie. There are a ton of ways to finance more for defence — starting with net zero — without taking a penny from schools or hospitals. Reeves should be ashamed of herself for allowing this nonsense. Suggests she’s really desperate.

Not a damned word from Starmer, Streeting or Burnham about the white lad handcuffed while dying because they believed the Sikh knifeman who accused him of racism. Was he the wrong colour. Had he been black or brown Starmer would be outside the court taking the knee.

This unequivocally confirms three things: a) The game had not finished. b) The referee had not blown the whistle. c) The much ended because of the pitch invasion, and the perceived safety risk to Hearts players. There's no ambiguity now.
