This is so symbolic of how everything now works in Britain. Avoid real planning, focus on short term goals and watch as the future gets more and more expensive to put right.

5 months of these balancing costs would buy you a 1Gw Kepco nuclear power station.
Now that America will undoubtedly rewokify, it feels like UK has an even more difficult battle to win. Republicans were providing a powerful counterweight to the socialist, nutty-left part of our government but it seems like now it will be a force multiplier for the insane ideas.

Well done Cheshire East Council
“Ahead of Remembrance Sunday, our highways teams have been installing poppy road markings across the borough, in honour of the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces, veterans and their families.
We will remember them”
I really hope Americans can find a sensible way through this mess. From what I've seen of the Democrat's position on this, it's even more regressive than Europe (at least in rhetoric).
I think there is a thread-the-needle moment available for UK here too. Lots of talent, perception isn't quite as bad as other places. Unfortunately there is no energy or infra to host serious compute, so it needs to be done in some alternative way.

tate & lyle was british for over 165 years and got sold to an american company this year. intertek went to the swedes for £9.5bn, schroders to the americans for £9.9bn, beazley to zurich. mitie was the 11th £1bn+ takeover of a london company in 2026.
we build something good, it trades cheap in london, and someone abroad buys it at a 62% premium because they can see what it’s worth and we can’t.

What a depressing Labour u-turn on the extension of ILR for Boriswave care workers. It’s not just the huge cost heading our way, it’s the way that care workers are singled out for the sentimental treatment we usually reserve for NHS nurses. For our own benefit as a country we need the average carer to be better paid, better trained, and higher status (I recently wrote a book partly about this The Care Dilemma). But we don’t have to pretend they are all angels: there are some who are v good, most who are average and too many who are useless, as in any walk of life. The immigrant carers are coming here for a better life from poorer often failing societies not because they love looking after British people. In my own last hospital stay most the care assistants were Boriswave women, mostly from Africa - some decent some indifferent - but ALL spoke quite poor and v heavily accented English that was sometimes hard to understand and unless I spoke slowly and deliberately they struggled to understand me. This is obviously a sensitive issue that many people experience but don’t feel able to talk about (though it must be reflected in those low satisfaction surveys), partly because a carer has helped you when you are vulnerable and there is a kind of reflex gratitude even if the care has actually been a bit sloppy or incompetent (and you also feel you’re getting it free so shouldn’t moan, even if you’re paying more and more in tax). Yet it’s crazy that we are spending billions subsidising this when we could be using the money to incentivise British ppl, who speak the language fluently and understand the culture, to do these jobs.
Charlie is such a diligent researcher and journalist, with more experience on the topic than almost anyone else. Haven’t had a chance to read it yet but I’m sure it will be thorough.

We spent a record £561m balancing the power grid in October, the second record month in a row.
Balancing costs this autumn have passed £1bn, and NESO forecasts put 2026 close to £4bn.

Is the UK Government literally #1 in the world in terms of how well it's preparing for AGI, given the resources it has available?
After last week's budget, I think so.
Puts some other countries to shame really.

So now British taxpayers are expected to fund roads, airports and green energy projects in poorer EU countries, while Burnham signs us up to Brussels regulations. We voted to leave the EU, not to become its cash machine without a vote or a say.

This is an embarrassment to every member of Labour; if this cannot be resolved swiftly, there is absolutely zero reason to take this gov seriously.
This is such an important point. There is incompetency, profligacy and corruption at almost every turn.
Before demanding people pay more tax, we should ensure major government spending is ruthlessly negotiated and as transparent as possible.
