Condemnation isn’t enough. The U.S. must address the root cause by recognizing East Turkistan as an occupied country and supporting its right to self-determination, decolonization, and independence.

📢🗞️OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON THE 77TH ANNIVERSARY OF CHINA'S INVASION OF EAST TURKISTAN
Today, October 12, 2026, marks the 77th anniversary of the Chinese Communist invasion of East Turkistan. On this day in 1949, just eleven days after the establishment of the People's Republic of China, Chinese Communist forces began their military invasion of the sovereign Republic of East Turkistan. On December 22, 1949, they forcibly overthrew the East Turkistan Republic, extinguishing its independent institutions and subjecting our nation to Chinese occupation and colonial domination.
For seventy-seven years, the people of East Turkistan have endured the consequences of this act of aggression. What began as a military invasion developed into a systematic campaign of colonization, political repression, forced assimilation, and the destruction of our national identity, culminating in the ongoing Uyghur genocide. China's continued occupation and colonial domination remain the root cause of the genocide and the systematic denial of our people's fundamental rights, freedoms, and national sovereignty.
The atrocities inflicted upon Uyghurs, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, and other East Turkistani peoples—including mass internment, mass organ harvesting, slave labor, torture, forced sterilizations, forced family separations, religious persecution, and the systematic destruction of our cultural and national heritage—are not isolated human rights violations. They are manifestations of a broader system of colonial subjugation aimed at consolidating China's control over our homeland and destroying our people's distinct national existence.
October 12 is the National Day of Mourning of the East Turkistani nation. On this solemn occasion, we honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives defending our homeland, those who perished under Chinese occupation, and the countless victims of China's ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity. We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to securing justice for our people, ending China's occupation and genocide, and restoring East Turkistan's rightful independence and sovereignty.
This year, our struggle for decolonization has entered a new phase. On May 5, 2026, the East Turkistan Government in Exile and the East Turkistan National Movement formally submitted a historic petition to the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization, requesting that East Turkistan be recognized and inscribed as a Non-Self-Governing Territory. This initiative seeks to address the fundamental political question underlying decades of persecution: China's occupation and colonial rule, and the denial of the East Turkistani people's inherent right to national self-determination, decolonization, and independence.
The East Turkistan Government in Exile calls upon the United Nations to fulfill its responsibilities under the UN Charter and the principles of decolonization. We urge the General Assembly and the Special Committee on Decolonization to formally address East Turkistan's unresolved national question and take meaningful steps toward ending Chinese colonial domination.
We further call upon the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, and all governments committed to freedom and international law to formally recognize East Turkistan as an occupied country, hold China accountable for its genocide and crimes against humanity, and support the East Turkistani people's right to self-determination and the restoration of their national independence and sovereignty.
We remind the international community, including Muslim and Turkic nations, that genocide prevention, decolonization, and the protection of peoples' right to self-determination are international responsibilities, not matters of political convenience. Continued silence and inaction in the face of China's atrocities only perpetuate the suffering of our people and undermine the principles upon which the international order was established.
The international community must recognize that ending the Uyghur genocide requires more than condemning individual atrocities. It requires confronting the underlying system of colonial domination that has enabled them to occur. Without ending China's occupation and restoring our people's national sovereignty, the fundamental conditions enabling genocide and systematic persecution will remain.
The East Turkistan Government in Exile reiterates that China's occupation will never extinguish our nation's inherent right to independence. Seventy-seven years of colonial subjugation have neither erased our national identity nor broken our determination to restore our sovereign state.
East Turkistan's decolonization and the restoration of its independence are not merely political aspirations; they are essential to ensuring the survival, freedom, security, and future of our nation. A free and sovereign East Turkistan will contribute to regional peace, international security, and the advancement of justice and human dignity.
On this National Day of Mourning, we renew our solemn pledge to those who have fallen, those who continue to suffer, and the generations yet to come: we will not abandon our homeland, surrender our sovereignty, or cease our struggle until East Turkistan's independence is fully restored.
May Almighty God have mercy upon our martyrs, protect our people, strengthen our nation's resolve, and hasten the liberation, decolonization, and full restoration of East Turkistan's independence and sovereignty.

📢 ETGE Urges President Trump to Press Xi Jinping to End the Uyghur Genocide at Trump–Xi Summit
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ahead of President Donald J. Trump’s September 24 meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington, the East Turkistan Government-in-Exile (ETGE) calls on President Trump to confront Xi over China’s ongoing genocide against Uyghurs, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, and other Turkic peoples in Occupied East Turkistan, and to ensure that no agreement with Beijing comes at the expense of the East Turkistani people. Trade, AI, and critical minerals are expected to feature prominently.
East Turkistan is not a peripheral issue. It is central to China’s economic, energy, and strategic power. Chinese government figures place approximately 30 percent of China’s onshore petroleum resources, 34 percent of its natural-gas resources, and more than 40 percent of its coal resources in East Turkistan. Beijing itself describes the occupied country as a “core area” and gateway of the Belt and Road Initiative linking China with Central Asia and wider Eurasia.
It is also central to China’s military and technological infrastructure. Near Qumul, the Chinese military has constructed a field containing approximately 110 intercontinental ballistic-missile silos, while Lop Nur served as China’s nuclear-testing ground. Chinese authorities are expanding large-scale computing and AI infrastructure across the territory.
The ETGE maintains that China’s occupation enables Beijing to exploit East Turkistan’s resources, strategic geography, and people while strengthening the power underpinning its competition with the United States. President Trump’s first administration signed the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act, sanctioned the Chinese colonial paramilitary Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps and responsible officials, and formally determined in January 2021 that the PRC had committed genocide and crimes against humanity against Uyghurs and other persecuted peoples.
“President Trump has already demonstrated that America can confront Beijing over its crimes in East Turkistan,” said Dr. @MamtiminAla, President of the East Turkistan Government-in-Exile. “He should make clear to Xi Jinping that genocide, colonial occupation, and the exploitation of our homeland cannot be separated from the strategic challenge China poses to the United States. Ending the genocide requires confronting the occupation that sustains it and supporting the restoration of East Turkistan’s national independence.”
East Turkistan possesses a millennia-old history of statehood and political sovereignty predating the People’s Republic of China. The East Turkistan Republics proclaimed in 1933 and 1944 represented modern restorations of that sovereignty. The ETGE maintains that the East Turkistani people retain their inherent right to decolonization, national self-determination, and the restoration of national independence and sovereignty.
“The critical minerals, energy resources, trade routes, and military infrastructure Beijing controls through Occupied East Turkistan are pillars of Chinese strategic power,” said @SalihHudayar, Foreign Minister of the ETGE and President of the East Turkistan National Movement. “East Turkistan’s independence is therefore not only essential to the survival of our people, but also directly relevant to America’s long-term strategic interests.”
The ETGE calls on President Trump to raise the genocide and occupation directly with Xi Jinping, reject agreements that weaken accountability or forced-labor restrictions, demand the release of arbitrarily detained East Turkistanis, and support the East Turkistani people’s right to decolonization and the restoration of national independence and sovereignty.
