Figs, Vines and Roses by Joy M. Lilley is a warm and moving historical family saga that captures the heart of late-19th-century England with tenderness and authenticity.
Set beginning in 1888, the story follows young Isabella “Issy” Merryweather as she enjoys a privileged yet compassionate childhood at Cobnut Hall with her brother Clarence, beloved dog Molly, and cherished grandmother. A family move to Kent changes everything when she forms a secret, deep bond with Terence, a young man from a humble background. Through love, social barriers, heartbreak, resilience, and personal growth—including Isabella’s determination to become a teacher—the novel explores class differences, forbidden romance, family loyalty, and the quiet strength of the human spirit. Readers appreciate the gentle pacing, vivid period details of English life and gardens, emotional honesty, and the way the story lingers with themes of memory, empathy, and quiet courage. It is a thoughtful, heartfelt read that celebrates love and endurance across social divides.

Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle (From Vol. 8 of the Collected Works of C. G. Jung) by C. G. Jung**
Translated by R. F. C. Hull. Foreword to the 2010 edition by Sonu Shamdasani.
Jung’s essay on meaningful coincidence: events that line up in time without a causal chain that science can name.
He was intrigued early by juxtapositions that ordinary rationality could not explain. He discussed the problem with Albert Einstein before the First World War and first used the word “synchronicity” in 1930, in connection with the *I Ching*. A long friendship and correspondence with the physicist Wolfgang Pauli pushed him toward the mature statement published in 1952 and reprinted here. The essay includes historical and contemporary material and describes an astrological experiment Jung ran to test the idea.
This Princeton Jung Extracts paperback is the standard short edition of the classic text.

To the reader who knows Washington’s marble face and Jefferson’s phrases—and still has not met the irascible Yankee who would not stay home — this is for you.
John Adams by David McCullough
Winner of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Biography
The Pulitzer Prize–winning biography of America’s second president—and the book behind the HBO miniseries.
McCullough follows John Adams from Massachusetts lawyer to revolutionary, diplomat, vice president, and president: brilliant, fiercely independent, often irascible, always honest. Jefferson called him the “colossus of independence.” Some thought him out of his senses. He spared nothing for the Revolution, rose to the presidency, and kept the country out of a war he judged unnecessary.
At the center is his marriage to Abigail Adams—one of the great love stories in American history—and a correspondence that also includes one of the most extraordinary exchanges in English, with Thomas Jefferson.
This is history on a grand scale: politics and war, but also human nature, faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal.

To the reader who inherited a marble Washington—and wants the man of fire, calculation, and self-command underneath — this is for you.**
Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow**
Winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Biography
From the author of *Alexander Hamilton*, a one-volume life of George Washington.
Chernow takes Washington from a troubled boyhood through the French and Indian War, the making of Mount Vernon, the Continental Army, the Constitutional Convention, and the first presidency. The aim is a portrait as real and charismatic as the one his contemporaries saw—not the lifeless waxwork of later reverence.
A laconic man of granite self-control, Washington often draws more respect than affection. Chernow works against that stereotype: a celebrated horseman and dancer, a man of fierce opinions and a guarded inner life, a complicated husband and slaveholder, and a canny political genius who gathered Hamilton, Madison, Adams, and Jefferson and shaped the new federal government.
Based on massive archival research. A long book with a crisp pace.

Uniting the States: Six Crucial Moments That Forged the American Miracle by Brian Kilmeade
#1 New York Times bestselling author. FOX & Friends cohost. William Morrow, October 13, 2026.
“Brian Kilmeade provides us with a variation of Profiles in Courage focused on our Founders… These half dozen men helped unify our country and establish our narrative of striving for a more perfect union.” —Admiral William H. McRaven
Kilmeade’s founders are not only the names on the documents. They are John Adams defending the British soldiers after the Boston Massacre, Washington inventing a way to win against the strongest army on earth, Daniel Shays losing everything and inspiring the Constitutional Convention, Jefferson buying Louisiana from Napoleon, Madison declaring the War of 1812, and John Quincy Adams arguing for the Africans of the Amistad.
Philosophers declare; these men acted. The book’s claim is that the American miracle was forged in six specific moments by six specific people who raised their voices when the experiment could still have failed.
The book gives the personal Kilmeade—the storyteller of the Revolutionary years—and the public record: rule of law, improbable victory, the little man, the doubled map, the first war as a power, and the son who finished what the father began. Drawn from the crucible that turned colonies into a country.

Communism and the Conscience of the West (The Archbishop Fulton Sheen Signature Set Book 4) by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
Originally published 1948. Reissued by TAN Books. Long regarded as among the finest Catholic treatments of communism.
Dedicated to Our Lady in prayerful hope for the conversion of Russia. One of Sheen’s most forgotten and most important books.
Sheen’s communism is not only Marx and Lenin. It is the judgment on a West that reduced man to an economic animal and then wondered why a total system rushed in. Defects of the doctrine, its war on the family, the decline of historical liberalism, the antireligious spirit: all of it, he argued, sits on the conscience of the West.
Philosophers think; total systems demand the whole person. Sheen’s gift was that he could read Feuerbach, Marx, and Lenin in the original and still preach that the real struggle is for the soul of mankind.
The book gives the personal Sheen—radio priest, philosopher, convert-maker—and the public diagnosis: communism as complete philosophy of life, both effect and judgment on bourgeois civilization, still relevant wherever class hate rewrites history and the image of God in man is lost.
