Today is #TransDayOfRemembrance . We have published a blog on our Members' Area from @RAD_NUM member Luna, who discusses their thoughts on the day, and how all of us can work to end harms against trans people.
NUM members can read the blog here: nationaluglymugs.org/safety_…

ALT A brown-skinned feminine person holding a trans pride flag in a defiant stance. The text reads "I remember my first TDOR vigil like it was yesterday. I wished that night that next year would be better. Next year it wouldn’t take us a solid 20 minutes just to read the list of names. Next year we’d be done before sundown and the list of names would fit on a postage stamp. Next year would be better."

A new study on the experiences of sex workers in London finds that one-in-five have experienced police violence; rising to 42% for outdoor workers. It also finds that police enforcement, including against clients, increases sex workers' risk of violence: sti.bmj.com/content/early/20…

This practice runs contrary to current @PoliceChiefs guidance that states displacement should be avoided for welfare and safety of sex workers & advocates a victim-centred approach to build trust acknowledging sex workers’ vulnerabilities.

Sex workers on the street were targeted by police through displacement from work areas (77%), cautions or arrests (70%) or experiencing police violence (42%). Recent arrest or displacement from a work location were associated with increased risk of violence from clients & others.

Our new research found #sexwork ers' safety and mental health were affected by finances, housing and encounters with #police. Sex workers faced high levels of violence including from police which often went unreported. Many felt they wouldn't be treated fairly or taken seriously.

Important study. Violence, anxiety/depression are linked to poverty, unstable housing and police enforcement. We need to modify laws to allow sex workers to work safely and increase availability of housing and mental health services.

Excellent research into the lack of police protection, violence and homelessness that street-based sex workers faced in London between 2018/19.
The thread below outlines key findings, but the results are definitely worth reading yourself.

RT-ing this evergreen research from my colleagues at @EastLdnProject because, especially when it comes to protecting the most marginalised communities, evidence should always trump (even the most well meaning of) opinions.
Evidence “clearly shows” that criminalising sex workers, incl. clients, leads to increased risk of:
1️⃣ sexual/physical violence, across 5,204 participants
2️⃣ infection w HIV/STI, 12,506 participants
3️⃣ condomless sex, 9,447 participants
