Hurricane #Otis made landfall near #Acapulco, Mexico early this morning as a Category 5 hurricane. That's bad enough, but just 24 hours prior, it was a tropical storm and was forecast to make landfall as a tropical storm. Not even a hurricane warning a day in advance... [1/2]

When a report of bed bugs is received, the vehicle is immediately fumigated. Our vehicles are not considered a hospitable environment for bedbugs, but they can be brought on by passengers at any moment, unfortunately. We are in the process of testing new non-fabric seats. ^JS

This is fucking insane. The driver is breaking multiple laws. The pedestrian did nothing wrong here, and is at absolutely no fault.
Pedestrian safety is a two-way street. What pedestrians and drivers can do to make our roadways safer ow.ly/zRzo50PWEkq

The term "missing middle housing" doesn't exist in Japan, because middle housing is far from missing. It's abundant, largely because it's legal and much cheaper and more efficient to build. The more builders construct the same type of structure, the faster and cheaper they can do it. To address a severe housing shortage after WWII, the Federal government in Japan simplified zoning for multi-family housing. The longer a developer spends tied up in regulatory processes, the higher the eventual project costs are (especially when interest rates are high!). The government made it easy to build housing. So builders built. This type of housing is great for infill sites in existing neighbourhoods: most people in Tokyo do not own cars, so the high cost of parking is not a part of the equation. If you dislike tall and sprawl (our current built form across most of this country) this deregulation is key to a more affordable & liveable future. businessinsider.com/america-…

An update to this: a sentencing hearing will be held over five days starting May 6, 2024. The length of time needed for submissions, as well as the availability of lawyers involved, put this out well into next year.

those bygone, safe, carefree days of 90s Toronto, when the crime rate was double what it is today and children couldn't leave the house unaccompanied in my neighbourhood because of Paul Bernardo

The first global temperature data is in for the full month of September. This month was, in my professional opinion as a climate scientist – absolutely gobsmackingly bananas. JRA-55 beat the prior monthly record by over 0.5C, and was around 1.8C warmer than preindutrial levels.
